I decided to solve the problem "network setting have been changed by another program", received after I installed a recent Mac security update, with an upgrade from Tiger to Leopard. I had exhausted the possibilities offered by the Mac Fix It forum, and I had not been able to access the internet for a long time. Apple, it seems, has not offered a fix.
Leopard installed easily, and I did a custom install, choosing to not install printer drivers, non-English languages, and a Unix module, saving myself 5 or so gigs of space. The dial up internet is now working great, and surfing on the Web is much faster than with Windows XP, with many less problems. I also installed the recent 10.5.5 update.

this product arrived promptly, however had a blemish on the disk that caused only a portion of xp to load. after a series of helpful emails during which the seller tried to help me work around the problem;to no avail, he contacted microsoft on his own, without me asking, and got them to replace the item, which arrived promptly. it was rare for a disk to be defective as microsoft has excellent quality control. unfortunately, this has screwed up my apple so i have a portioned harddrive with a bad section of windows on it. (i have a mac) apple says its a windows problem, microsoft says its on a mac so its a mac problem. nobody knows how to fix it. inspect any software carefully prior to running to avoid a huge hassle.

As a long-time Mac user, the one Apple product I have stayed away from is .mac and its successor MobileMe. Why? Because if you want email only, there are better and cheaper alternatives (try Gmail). However, I recently ran into need for two killer features that made this service worthwhile: seamlessly publishing my calendar for colleagues to see and iDisk file sharing. Now there are alternatives to accomplish both of these things on the Net, but they require some geekiness. With MobileMe, I simply said publish my calendar and there it was. Same simplicity for file sharing. Is it worth $x (retail price is $99, but I paid under $50)? It was for me. Four stars for functionality and integration into the Mac OS. Lose a star for high-price...

After upgrading my system from Windows XP SP3 to Windows Vista SP1, it didn't take long for me to realize I wished I hadn't bothered. My system takes twice as long to boot-up, and my programs take longer to load. Turning off Aero speeds things up a bit, but Aero is the one thing about Vista I really like. It's not my system either. I have a fast Intel Penryn Processor, and 3GB's of RAM. I'll admit that the upgrade was painless for me, and not nearly the nightmare that some users experienced. I also have no major issues with it. The problem is, everything that Vista and XP can do, XP does it better and faster. Without all the eye candy turned on, you'd think that XP was an upgrade to Vista. I'm currently beta testing Vista SP2 which should be released Q1, ... Read More:

You cannot beat the market dictatorship run by Intel together with Microsoft. AMD has created a much better processor than Intel and introduced it faster into the market, but the AMD Turion X2 64bit is not 100% supported by Microsoft. When I tried to install the Windows Vista 64bit, after 70% done the installation failed and when I tried the Windows Vista 32bit, it failed after 96%. 96% supported does not make it work. So I had to throw away my AMD-based laptop and had to buy an Intel-based laptop instead. I figured out my fight is doomed and I had lost enough money and time already resisting the Wintel monopoly. Very sad.
The money I spent on Vista, wasted as well. HP warns about Windows XP not actually running on the AMD processores unless using HP fixes, ... Read More:

I like the Leopard, and I have shared it with family members who also have a MAC. They agree that it is easy to use. The only thing I had to do...that I'm aware of ... is update RealPlayer. But that was very easy. This has some interesting ways of reminding me of things, and there are still some things I can't find. But I'm a slow learner, and I have to get with my "tutor" to be able to upgrade my brain. But so far, I have not found anything I don't like about it.

My XP HP battleship finally could sail no more.. never gave Vista any thought actually..a few days ago the inevitable happened... plus the usb ports were becoming sloppy, white screen, but when it was good it was very good.. cut to the chase... From what i gather, buying Vista is a pant load different then purchasing a new computer. I am still amazed... my old XP would recycle sometimes, didn't like rollup 3, never thought I could use my extra's lke printer with Vista/new machine, the thing feches a program and my old close and play printer (all in one) is like new in doing its thing, same with "fixing" other programs, it just about apologizes for the trouble.. I don't know if the powers to be will post this but a new machine and Vista is a smooth experience... most of the ... Read More:
A lot of people have said "I don't know what's the difference between this and the full (retail) version." Allow me:
1- This is about half the $$.
2- If you get the full (more expensive version) and the PC (or its motherboard) dies, or you just want to replace (upgrade) it, you can move the (expensive) copy of XP to the new machine. You are NOT allowed to do that with this cheaper copy. It is "tied" to one PC (or one motherboard, depending).
3- This is XP Home. Compared to XP Pro, Home doesn't have the Encryption File System, Group Policies, Remote Desktop (server), Dynamic Disk support, Disk Manager, IIS (bad web server), Active Directory, Domain Login, Roaming Profiles, and only supports simplified (network) file security and not ACLs. ... Mobile me Rocks. Although most of what I wanted to do I could have done with a single unit, I used the family pack to give one to my brother and one to my sister to use in their families. The sharing of the calendar and contacts is great within the family. And since we all use different computers some apple some dell it makes them all share this stuff together. Its just what we needed.
