I have been using these Altec Lansing XT2 speakers with an h/p Pavilion Notebook as well as with an Apple Mac Pro. In both cases, I haven't needed to use the external power supply (supplied as standard in the very nice travelling case), but just power from the USB port itself (the external power supply is probably very useful if one only has available 'low-power' USB ports designed for things such as a mouse and/or a keyboard).
The sound quality at low to medium volume levels is absolutely excellent. However, I can't give these speakers 5-stars because of slight distortion at maximum volume - and especially at the higher frequency range.
But overall, the simplicity of just plugging these speakers into a USB port [that ... Read More:

Have just set these speakers up on my daughters computer and am really amazed at the quality of volume from these little speakers. The bass is deep without distortion, and the highs come across well. I listen to a lot of classical music and before I plugged them in to my daughters computer I plugged them in to my Sony portable (remember to turn of the Mega Bass on the source otherwise they will distort) and ran Classical FM through them and was amazed at the reproduction, classical music is a good test bed for speakers in my opinion and these came up trumps. On my daughters computer I set the graphic to rock and played some heavy metal at a loud volume and the stuff on the shelves started moving with the bass, and there was no real audible distortion ... Very good value for money, excellent quality that you would expect from Sony, if you're disappointed then I suggest there may be something wrong with your PC or your hearing!

Anyone who is looking for or prefer a portable, simple sound system for uni or office without the added wires and bulk, or who simply need the space, this is a perfect choice.
They look fabulous, build quality is good and the product has some weight for stabilty on a desk but also to reproduce sound accurately - which surprisingly responsive with deep bass without a separate sub!
Power, volume, bass and treble are conveniently located behind a pivoting door. Has a headphone jack for private listening, shielded for use near video monitors, as well as polished, piano-quality black finish.

At the price I think these speakers are fine for general computer use. Any sort of serious listening to music really needs something better. As you would expect they just don't have the depth of sound and quality of proper audio speakers. I know many people say they are not concerned, but it really irritates me that the on/off switch is on the back of the subwoofer. The manual suggests "for optimum sound quality place the subwoofer on the floor beneath your desk". Fine, but hardly convenient! As the amplifier is live when the speakers are switched on I feel I have to grovel about and switch them on and off each time I use them.
