Philips SBA290 Portable Speaker System

I found the sound quality to be excellent for its size. I brought it away on a stag and everyone was amazed that such full, rich sound could come from such small speakers. However, I soon noticed the sound quality markedly diminished when left on at medium to high volume for periods (say beyond 2 hours). I have only used it for extended periods with batteries, so I can only presume that it's a result of the batteries running low. The sound quality can end up so bad it's not worth listening to, but then if you let it rest for a few hours, without changing the batteries, the sound quality starts off great again. I can't really understand this. Can it be a battery effect?

The first thing to strike me about the Creative Travelsound was how attractive, chunky and apparently well made it is, a relief considering the price, which was getting on for as much as that paid for the compatible Stone Plus player.

The unit has a neat little stand and its own power switch, allowing the speakers to be used either actively with the supplied AAA batteries or passively via the MP3 player itself (which is not recommended as this drains the player's own battery unnecessarily).

The sound quality is fine to my untrained ear although, obviously, much depends on the bitrate at which the player's tracks were themselves recorded.

I bought this to take on holiday with me and needless to say I wont bother! The volume and sound quality is terrible, when I first switched it on it didnt work there was only a buzzing sound coming from one end of the speakers. You have to turn your mp3 player volume up as far as it goes and you can still hardly hear anything. AVOID!!

OK, sadly my old Yamaha speakers gave out on me after 8 years of great service. After reveiwing as many speakers as I could, I decided to go for a Creative set. Creative are supposed to be the kings of audio.

I got these speakers a week ago. When they first arrived they were a piece of cake to set up. However, they wouldn't work. I tried everything to get them to work... nothing! I got a relative to look them over and he found the pins for the volume/base controller were damaged. HE fixed them for me and the controlloer plugged in fine that time. The speakers work fine! However, seems strange that the speakers are depaendant on the volume base controller to work.

I've owned this speaker system for the best part of a year now. A musician myself, it was bought after I decided I wanted surround sound - but didn't want to pay an arm and a leg for it.

In that respect, these speakers have performed wonderfully and it's an amazing experience to sit in the centre of a 7.1 surround system and just let the music immerse you completely.

One of those remarkable things about 7.1 systems are of course - the practicalities. If you are not carefull, you'll end up propping speakers up on digerydoos and having small black cables running everywhere like some bizzare space-ant colony.
