I found this piece of kit to be reliable and a lot more functional than most of the external soundcards I have tried. Most of the USB soundcards on the market are missing essential functionality that you would expect from even the most basic soundcards. Not this one.

I'm only awarding it four stars because the headphone output is very quiet. You can get away with it if you are using powered speakers but for headphone use the maximum volume is pathetically low.

M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard

It's the best thing there is out there at this price point. It's as simple as that. The drivers are well coded, the support is exemplary and the quality of the audio is crystal.

If you need more than 24bit/96KHz, then there is a higher model, but for me personally, I think anything higher is not necessary (expecially if you're mixing down to 16bit/44.1)

On top of all this, it has Midi I/O and SPDIF. What are you still reading this for? Go and buy one!

It's the best thing there is out there at this price point. It's as simple as that. The drivers are well coded, the support is exemplary and the quality of the audio is crystal.

If you need more than 24bit/96KHz, then there is a higher model, but for me personally, I think anything higher is not necessary (expecially if you're mixing down to 16bit/44.1)

On top of all this, it has Midi I/O and SPDIF. What are you still reading this for? Go and buy one!

I didn't buy this from Amazon, but I want to warn any potential buyers of its limitations.

I bought this so that I could play video on my laptop but still have decent sound. My surround sound system (like most these days) has digital optical input, and this unit has digital optical output, and is a 5.1 surround sound card. Should be fine, right?

Nope. The optical output only supports stereo sound, making the unit completely useless for me - and for many others, I suspect.

Minor plus points (pushing this to 2 stars instead of 1):
- The setup is pretty simple
- Terratec support confirmed the issue (and that there are no plans to fix it) quickly, and said they'd talk to marketing about making this ... Read More:

TRUST SC-5200 5.1 SURROUND SOUND CARD

i bought this soundcard for the simple reason that it had 5.1 audio and a digital coaxial output. I installed the card with no problems and booted up without a hitch.

However

Upon installing the drivers and configuring the sound outputs i discovered that it DOES NOT output Dolby Digital or DTS through the coaxial out which is the very reason I bought the card. Nowhere on the box does it state this and to actually get it working you have to buy a serparate module which is harder to find than you think. Also the volume control and sound quality leave a lot to be desired.

For the price it isnt too bad but I'd think again if you're an audiophile or have a decent set of 5.1 speakers
