My rx520 was working just fine when suddenly i get a message E90 on the screen which means you have to have it serviced (which btw would be more expensive than getting another printer). It turns out this message comes up because epson have installed timers or counters into their printers. so after a certain amount of usage your printer will simply die. Epson's excuse is that it is to prevent ink leaking onto your desk. And seems to be that's all it is - an EXCUSE to RIP YOU OFF, because after all, they could have allowed the scanner to continue working, couldn't they? But no, the whole all-in-one is dead.
Shame, i liked the negative scanning facility.
I've been loyal to epson, had a stylus 740 and an stylus 810 in the past ... Read More:

I bought my SJ 5590 as a replacement for an older HP scanner which I found very easy to use.
In contrast the SJ5590 is a nightmare. The scanner has been designed around the US letter size document, not A4, as a result if you leave an A4 document on the flatbed and then use the ADF, the scanning head cannot see the documents, if scan a small document without selecting the scan area you will get an image of the slot of the scanning window of the ADF on your image.
The ADF is supposed to be capable of scanning both sides of a sheet but it distorts the top of the second side and I have given up using it. It also tries to run pages back through the scanner when set to single sided scanning which leads to jamming.

Despite mixed reviews I decided on this scanner to archive my medium format and 4 x 5 transparencies. The scans are excellent and prints obtained from them are better than photochemical prints that I have. The accompanying software has been criticised for being slow. If you scan in 6 colour mode with dust and scratch removal enabled, then you will wait longer for the finished product - but the scans are rewarding. However, if you're careful about putting clean transparencies into the well designed holders (better than the Epson I had previously)and ensure that the scanner glass is also spotless (which should be standard practise)then you are rewarded with quicker scan times. I now consider that 6-colour scanning is almost obligatory if you appreciate ... Read More:

This S300 model will work with a Mac if you use VMWare fusion.
That aside, the scanner defies description...you truly need to see it to believe it could scan so well/easily.
I put it to the test straight out the box with staples left in sheets, crumpled corners, torn irregular size papers...anything goes. I am truly impressed.
I have VMWare running, Scansnap organiser running in the background in a Windows XP virtual machine on my Mac Laptop. I've set OCR on and files are saved on the Mac side ready to be seen by spotlight. I have avoided the Japanese Mac drivers purely to skip the hassle...it seems Fusion is the the answer for me.
Portability the selling point over its bigger brother S510.
