Franklin BFQ450 French-English Dictionary & Translator

I've had my BFQ450 for 5 years and was browsing the web looking for a replacement.

I would agree with other comments that the key do stick down and need to be pressed firmly, there is also a tendency for one key to not respond as quickly as the others leading to some misspelling which can be annoying. It has been pretty resilient, after 4 years the only damage is one of the lid hinges which has come loose.

Probably the MOST annoying thing is that when you do make a spelling mistake or, as I commonly do, try to translate an English word in French or vice versa you can't cancel the operation and just switch languages You either have to wait until it tells you that it can't find the word, or turn it off and retype everything, ... Simple and easy to use. Have used it in 4 different countries so far and found that people understand what I am saying.

I bought this on Amazon several months ago and can not do with out it. So far, in the 5 months I've had it, I have only had to reset it once. It did play up and I had a big red X but I was quite easily able to fix the issue and even managed to restore my previous settings such as favourite locations and set up so it was not an issue. The software is also easy to use and you are able to download updates which come out quite regularly and also download fixes from other users out there to ensure maps are as accurate as possible.

There are loads of stuff you can download and it updates quite quickly when driving. I bought it because it was rated as number one in What Car magazine at the time and I do not regret getting it. However, I can not compare ... Read More:

I bought this unit 3 weeks ago from Halfords for £99 and have used it almost everyday since. Its a very good example of using good technology to make a very user-friendly product. It was very easy to set-up straight out of the box and personalise after registering on the Garmin website.

Then Garmin sent me a map update CD which I connected to the unit via my laptop and let the CD installer do its job. In the middle of the update, the USB cable got disconnected and that was the start of a big problem. the unit froze up and when I restarted it, showed the Garmin GPS BSOD - 'No detailed mapping available. Your Streetpilot cannot function'. The computer would not longer recognise the unit as a peripheral. I tried myGarmin support but tthat takes forever to load. ... Read More:

Franklin DBE-1490 Spanish / English Dictionary

I agree with most of the other reviews that this is a very useful item to own for a student of Spanish. However, I have contacted Franklin UK with a problem that I have found since owning my 1490.
I cannot find any way to conjugate the important verb "haber" which is used extensively in the compound tenses of Spanish. Otherwise the grammar lessons, games and other features are great however, and it is nicely made.

This device is unreliable with (either of 2) Palm Tungsten T running Soaringpilot. either drops bluetooth connection, or looses satellite view after a few minutes. works ok with a standard laptop though.

I subsequently bought a (used) holux 236, which works perfectly.

I had problems with my cable but in all honesty wasn't sure if it was this half (GPS TO SERIAL PORT) of the cable or the other half of the cable (USB TO SERIAL PORT) that was at fault.

Downloading was hit and miss, sometimes it would work, other times it said it couldn't find the GPS. It even slipped out of its connection at the GPS end on several occasions.

Wiggling the two halfs of the serial connectors together seemed to fix the problem each time the message appeared 'unable to find GPS', but I soon became very annoyed with this and decided to send both halves back.

In the end I settled for a one piece cable (not available on this site - see comments) which works perfectly and was cheaper too.
