I think roughly 70% of my waking hours were spent in the company of my Mega Drive during the early 90s, so this handheld device is one of the more exciting discoveries of the year! I managed to get one from a high street retailer a few weeks ago and thought I'd share my thoughts here.
GAME SELECTION
While it certainly isn't the most ideal selection (Streets of Rage, Sonic 3 and Eternal Champions would have made it perfect), for the price it has an excellent choice of games. Sonic and Knuckles is obviously the highlight and remains as brilliant now as it was when it arrived 14 years ago and the other notable gems are Kid Chameleon, Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Columns 3 (although the original would have been better) and ... I remember how popular Street Fighter was when I was a kid. I had to have a joint Birthday and Christmas present one year just so my parents could afford to get me a Super NES with Street Fighter 2 Turbo included!!
The Special Championship Edition was only released for the Sega Megadrive and is a combination of the original Championship Edition and the Hyper/Turbo editions. It is every bit as good as the arcade and has the added advantage that you can vary the speed between original sluggish and really fast.
The controller is excellent too and is a reproduction of the 6-button Megadrive controller that was brought out specifically for playing SF2. I actually prefer this one as it weighs less and the D-pad has a "loose" feel ... Read More:

There's not much to say about this little box other than it's brilliant from the stylish retro design of the system to every gaming aspect. The games feature arcade perfect gameplay (occasionally with the high score moved to the side to fit your TV screen better).
I am hooked on Ms. Pac-Man which has always been my favourite Pac-Man game and hours seem to pass when I'm alone with her! (Don't tell my girlfriend!!!) I'm sure no one needs a further explanation of this one.
Pole Position is incredibly playable thanks to an ingenious control system whereby you twist the joystick in the direction you want to go rather than pushing it. It feels sort of like an arcade steering wheel. This only takes a few seconds to get used to and you're ... Read More:
Undisputed leader of the home videogame market was Atari's truly revolutionary 2600 console. In fact, the pixellated magic produced by this teak-effect box of jiggery-pokery helped Atari shift over 30 million units and the 2600 (or VCS) is now universally regarded as the godfather of home consoles. Even today, videogame aficionados fondly remember that primitive, thumb-numbing Atari joystick with blister-tinged affection. Which is just as well, because ingenious boffins have now managed to cram 10 classic Atari games into an officially licensed replica Atari joystick!
The 10-in-1 really puts the "joy" in joystick, and you'll be unable to put it down, even when it's not plugged in. In fact, position it next to your PS2/Xbox/GameCube and see ... Read More:
My 8 year old wanted to learn how to play chess! - however I didn't have the time to sit with him every day and play. This 'toy' has answered my prayers. The easiest level frequently lets him win as the computer plays random moves every now and then, thus making 'mistakes' which he loves. He now plays against his action man and toy dog, and so has established a league table. We are not hot chess players but enjoy a game as a bit of family fun. This is an ideal item if you just want to get on and play. It also remembers where all the pieces were if you have to turn it off mid game, and equally if the board gets knocked, just press the button on the side and it will tell you where the piece was placed. - just make sure you notice the difference between ... I intend to return this product as soon as the shop opens today.
Looks great, feels nice, loads of customizable buttons and nice feedback... but it fails in two (what I feel to be) most important requirements - responsiveness and retaining calibration.
I tested it with two games, a flight simulation and a space combat simulation. It's great it you intend to sweep across the screen, but if you need pinpoint accuracy, forget this product. On top of this already major flaw, the plane/spacecraft will start to drift left or right if I took my hand off the joystick. Tapping it in the other direction fixes that.
Maybe it's just too loose and that's causing both problems. Either way, the problems are there and I had better ... Read More:
