Resident Evil 2 (GameCube)

Resident Evil 2 is so good that I recently played through it three times in one sitting (one of the few benefits of unemployment is the abundance of free time). From the opening FMVs and that first awesome section dashing through Raccoon City ("the next thing I knew, the entire city was infested with zombies") through to the Police Headquarters, cavernous sewers and the then-traditional laboratory-set ending, this game exudes quality through and through.

While some were put off by it, the Resident Evil control system was in my mind perfect, and only improved upon in Resident Evil 4 (which much of contemporary gaming owes A LOT to). The soundtrack is incredible, with each and every scene scored with the perfect blend of atmosphere ... Read More:

The review by "Olsta" that seems first up when I log on, sums up the nature of this game.

Nintendo will eventually release the Wii version so you can steer with the Wiimote. In the meantime this version is a great way to enjoy a truly great game for all the family. As with all Gamecube games on disc you need the Gamecube controllers (Not the Wii Classic one) and a Gamecube memory card if you want to save progress and points. Memory is not necessary to play when the family just load it up for an hour of fun! I got a set of Gamecube wireless controllers to keep the wirefree environment (Madcatz ones), and invested in an original Gamecube memory card due to forums indicating problems with third party ones. We have had no problems using this on the ... Read More:

I bought this game to play on the Wii after having played Super Mario Galaxy to the bone and getting all 121 stars, which were indeed difficult and stressful to get but not at all compared to Super Mario Sunshine.

The game seems rushed and not well-finished at all. Surely Mario does look much better than the precarious Super Mario 64 design but the game looks like a testing beta version of itself. The graphics aren't great, the music is... just there, and the gameplay ranges from funnily easy to insanely difficult. Plus the cameras are almost manual and only turn by themselves when you're in tight situations, usually making you die.

Okay, lots of people like difficult stuff - as I do - but the difficulty of Mario Sunshine is gratuitously ... Read More:

Before the infamous "mansion incident" Rebecca Chambers a rookie member of S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics And Rescue Services) mooches about on a train trying to locate fugitive Billy Coen eventually the two co-operate and stubmle upon an umbrella research centre filled with the undead. This games takes the player to new depths an exposes some of the never before told secrets of umbrella and Rebecca and Billy are about to discover them.

Resident evil zero introduces some new monsters along with the old monsters such as the zomies and the dogs. It has a new system where you can drop items on the floor anywhere you are, eliminating the old itembox system. Also there is a new partner zapping system which allows the player to switch between Rebecca and Billy as ... Read More:

Resident Evil for the PSX more or less shares responsibility with Shining Force and Final Fantasy VII for getting me hopelessly hooked on videogames in my early teens. However the laughable attempt to weave a gripping story through B-movie style dialogue was hard to take seriously, even back then. Sadly in this visually stunning remaking, the lousy narrative crushes the tension and seriousness of RE like a giant radioactive turtle would an Ice Cream Truck.

If you're a die hard resident evil fan, you've probably bought it, completed it, enjoyed/ignored the horrific dialogue and voice acting and bought the T-shirt. If you're looking for some classic horror to revive on your Wii, you could do a lot worse than Resident Evil (GC), but don't get your hopes up if you're ... Read More:

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GameCube)

In 2001 Nintendo made a decision to move away from the normal 3 dimensional graphics and try out something new, known as cel shading. And it certainly paid off.

The graphics in Wind Waker are jaw-dropping. By rendering 2 dimensional sprites in a 3 dimensional world the game has an artistic, highly stylised, often cartoony feel about it. This, combined with the vivid colours and beautiful attention to detail means that the game is a pleasure to play from start to finish. Enemies explode into a cloud of smoke, the wind rushes into your sails, grass swishes and the sea swells. Although the graphics have changed dramatically from earlier releases, none of the atmosphere of the game has been lost.

The gameplay is also great, if sometimes a little simplistic. The ... Read More:

I just want to address those complaining that it is simply a port over, a carbon copy of the PS version.

Yes it is. Capcom never said it was going to be a full remake like RE1. This release is simply to allow GC users who may not have ever owned a Playstation or Dreamcast to finally own this game. I think them porting it over and releasing it for GC is a wonderful thing. Yes it 32- bit graphics, yes its exactly the same game, no there are no new bits or alternate layout with massively improved graphics. But with a game this good, do you really need it?

If you don't own this game on any other console, then get it, it is one of the best Res games out there and far superior to RE4. Ignore the people complaining about it only being a port over, they obviously are ... Read More:

You capture wild Pokémon only, right?

Wrong! The lead character in this game wears a device on his arm, allowing him to snag Pokémon. However, you still can't just snag any Pokémon.

Teaming up wth a girl who has the ability to see dark auras, you travel around rescuing "Shadow Pokémon", who's hearts have been sealed shut in labs. Caring for these Pokémon and taking them to a special place restores the Pokémon to their original state.

When you've snagged all the Shadow Pokémon, and restored them, you're said to be able to get Ho-oh as well. I can't vouch for that yet, but I'm working on it.

I never owned a Gamecube, so I never got to play this game. I loved the prequal on the N64, and always thought that this game looked good, but just never got around to it. Now I own a Wii, the gateway to a plethora of retor games has opened before me and this is the first title checked off my "to buy" list. Of course, I had to buy a Gamecube remote and memory card - don't forget to grap those!

Anyway, this game looks fantastic (even now) and plays well. The controls are a little convoluted and tricky (I've no idea what my targetting computer efficiency score means and I've no idea how to improve it) but you get used to them. And this feels like Star Wars. It feels like your in the movies and it feels good.

In short, if you've bagged yourself a Wii, grab this game too. It's dirt ... Read More:
