I bought the 4th edition (2006) of this book, not as a travel companion, but to help me decide whether to take a trip to California. The hotel prices are more up to date now, and this is one factor which was important to me as one of my aims in reading this book was to assess the cost of a possible trip. I found the introductory sections on Environment, History and Culture really interesting, I think the thoroughness of the background information is one of the areas in which LP excel. I looked at the practicalities - food, transport, etc., and I read the sections on San Francisco and the National Parks. Despite finding the descriptions of the National Parks very tempting, the book has not yet persuaded me that California is the place ... Read More:

I am surprised at the negative feedback here. As a consistent user of Lonely Planet guides, I have to say that this ranked as one of the more useful country guides i have come across. Writing guidebooks must be a very tricky business - it is necessary to include such a vast quantity of information, while trying simultaneously to capture the feel and mood of a country in such a way that people know what to expect back home. This particular guide does an excellent job in this respect.

Bought this book because of the good review it had on Amazon. It proved to be invaluable on our recent holiday in Ireland and I would heartily recommend it.

After the low point of my relationship with Lonely Planet (Montréal and Québec City), I was pleased to have my faith restored in the imprint with this excellent guide.

As you'd expect, author Damien Simonis sings the city's praises, but it's never over the top and, let's face it, how many cities can you name that can beat Barcelona? (Of the three I can think of, two are Spanish.) This is a well-measured talking up of a city that needs no talking up.

A number of elements make Barcelona for me: accessibility of live music, art, food and language.

Taking the last first, this is the only place I found Simonis indecisive, and I have to admit I'm still confused myself, but generally speaking I get away with my self-taught ... Read More:

Argentina (Lonely Planet Country Guide)

I have used Lonely Planet guides a number of times to good effect, however the Argentina guide was woefully inaccurate, resulting in a good deal of frustration. The maps are both out of date and in some cases never correct in the first place. A suggested option for tango in Buenos Aires led us into a tourist trap hell hole which ended up costing over £50 and the police getting involved. I think the book was written in 2003 and therefore is inadequate to guide a stranger.

In the end we abandonded the book and found life much easier. Argentina is a fabulous country - simply stunning. Buy another guide to avoid wasting your time there - but enjoy the place.

cannot praise this book enough. I rented a car and went to Jerusalem, The Galilee, The Golan, Tel Aviv and the Dead Sea. And this book made the trip what is was. From the secret view of the Dome of the Rock from the old Islamic college on the Via Delarosa to the unreal restaurant in the Golan ("Witch's Calderon" i think - in Nimrod).

cannot recommend highly enough - 6 stars
