My husband and I spent 4 days driving the south of Iceland in August 2007 and this book was great. The maps were spot on and the recommendations were spot on. We particularly loved the lobster soup at the Saegreifinn restuarant in Reykjavik and tried the whale meat kebab. Using this guide and the recommendations in it, we managed to go dog sledding, snow mobiling and whale watching. The only thing we missed was seeing Puffins, however they apparently left 2 weeks before we arrived, so we can't put that blame on the guide. Definitely the best guide out there for Iceland, highly recommended.

I visited Peru as part of a trip around South America in the summer and took this book in my backpack. I found it to be the most valuable item in my rucksack as it told me about some great hostels, brilliant eateries, and fab sights. All the entries were very up-to-date, unlike some of the other guidebooks out there. It was easy to find the information I required and the maps were simple to use. All in all a great product.

I have mixed feelings about this guide.
In terms of practicality, it's small and not too heavy for carrying around - but is still bigger than many other city guides available. The maps are quite useful although their scale can make a short walk look like a ten mile hike! The maps are also all located at the back and there are no maps integrated into the text, apart from one of the castle. This made it awkward as you needed to flick back and forth. Close ups of the most famous and crowded areas, like the Old Town Square, would have been useful.
Despite being published in 2007, there are some inaccuracies and the selection of shops, hotels etc. mentioned seems to miss out many of the more recent developments. It ... Read More:

Forget the tourist uniform of backpack and Lonely Planet/Rough Guide in hand.... you're going to need both hands to carry all the 'bargains' that the salesmen of Marrakech have so considerately helped you spend your money on!
This is a tremendous little guidebook to carry in your pocket as you wander round Marrakech.
The old Medina is a rabbit-warren of alleyways (you WILL get lost, so enjoy the experience!), so to have a well thought out little book like this on you is a real help. It is just the right size (and weight!) to slip into the leg pocket of your combat trousers or back pocket of your jeans, and has just enough practical information about sights of interest, shopping, restaurants etc etc, to keep you busy. I found ... Read More:

I bought this book for my 1st trip to HK (about 2 weeks ago). I found it great at 1st that it comes with a pull-out map but realise after; everywhere I go there were maps provided for including the hotel+tubes! The eating places suggested were over-rated and some of the local eats like the famous local HK pastry "wife biscuit" or "wanton noodles" were never mentioned which seems rather tragic.
Also, the nightlife suggested by the book was also so-so........ Instead i got to know about the hottest club (Club Beijing) from a local hairdresser doing my hair. The book also failed to mention that there was a hot bar right above Hotel LKF with fantastic view + the people tend to be dressier on Saturday than Friday!

I'm a fan of Lonely Planet guidebooks because, when it comes to the backpacker/individual traveller guides, I think they're the best you can get. They do have a lot of practical info and most of the stuff is accurate and helpful. However, I found that you have to approach them with some, say, pinch of salt. In the case of this guide, the I found the prices for accomodation + occassionally sights quite inaccurate (i.e. almost always higher) - I went to India in September 2008. Another thing I found slightly irritating was the language. The vocabulary was much more high-brow and, frankly, showy and exalted (too many superlatives, too many adjectives, etc.), than in the other guides I've used (Turkey, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia); my friends found ... I know it's my personal bug-bear, but as with most guidebooks on Spain the Murcia region isn't given the same treatment as other regions - just 10 pages (that wrongly suggest that all we've got there is beaches and golf courses) to cover the whole region while Valencia gets 50! That said, I like the Lonely Planet guides, they are beautifully produced and the colour photos are always outstanding.

A fabulous LP guide to a fabulous country. Thorough, accurate and honest reviews of everything and anything. AND, unlike other lonely planets, there is a wicked sense of humour and healthy cynicism. These guys dont take themselves too seriously!! Highly recommended.
