I've travelled quite a bit in Japan and this edition is much improved from my old copy published in 2000 (7th edition). The two new features are the "Top 20" and the example itineraries. First time traveller will find the example itineraries really useful. They are really good and well-travelled routes, covering top spots like Kyoto, Nara and Tokyo. The "Top 20" gives you some interesting ideas.
The lack of photos in the Lonely Planet Guides do make it bit harder to plan trips. For this reason, we also took the "Eye Witness Travel" with us but beyond looking at the photos, we didn't use it much. The Lonely Planet provided a good commentary of the various buildings and locations we visited.

If you're looking for a budget orientated guidebook then this isn't it. A quick peak at the budget accomodation section of any place reveals only one or two truly budget options before prices rise exponentially and quickly threaten to overwhelm the midrange section. A typical example will be a hotel/hostel for 60Dh alongside one for 200Dh - an unlikely budget range except for those who have been in the sun too long or those who have over-indulged in their ilicit booze stash.
Having used guidebooks almost continually for the past year the number of map related mistakes in this guidebook is above average. Considering how much time you spend navigating confusing Medinas searching for a hotel, this is the one area where you want your guidebook ... Read More:

As travel guides go, this one combines three very different places... first there's Singapore with its very modern outlook. Then there's Malaysia bridging the vibrant outlook of Kuala Lumpur with the colonial history of Georgetown. Finally there's Brunei which is a whole lot more laid back.
In terms of contents, there's the usual details of history, etiquette, sights etc. There's also the usual combination of excellent maps with only the occassional mistake where a particular landmark has been put on the wrong side of the road. Restaurant and accomodation advice are as usual mixed (many are gone by the time you visit) but it certainly provides good ideas if you are struggling to find somewhere, and also tells you the general area to find ... As me and a friend are planning a round the world trip this series of books has been a great help. In picking places where to go it's helpful to know whats there! Were mainly backpacking and using hostels so specific country guides aimed at this was essential. We needed to know campsites, country entry requirements, cost of living, activities, etiquette, transport options, do's and don'ts and most importantly what the food was like! As well as info on touring in campervans, car or footslogging. The book has it all and more. It covers all such topics and then reviews each place in the country individually. It has topics on law, car rental and purchase, gay and lesbians interests and so much more. If your travelling to this country then this book will ... Read More:

Took my fiance to Paris recently and bought this book for the trip.
Have always been impressed when I've taken one of the Lonely Planet guides on my travels, and this book maintained the high standards that I've come to expect from them.
Doesn't matter if you know a bit about where you are visiting or if you are completely clueless - everything you could need to know is in here.
Well written, easy to use, full of useful information, and yet small enough to fit in a coat pocket.
Highly recommend.

having left our copy of the Rough Guide to Vietnam in a taxi in Saigon during the first week of our trip, we had no option but to purchase a copy of Lonely Planet. We were very disappointed, if you stuck to the Lonely planet, you'd only see a quarter mile radius of where you land, and miss out on so much that vietnam offers. It felt as if the author lands at the local backpacker haunt, then does door to door reviews of the closest hotels, bars and restaurants. The reviews also seem to act as a reason for a price hike as prices don't reflect what the lonely planet suggests. Yes, there's inflation, but it was published only last year and the prices really did seem way off, even though we were traveling during the low season.

One of the best birthday presents I've ever received....
It's not a book to replace individual lonely planet guides, but is a brilliant way to chase away winter blues, or alternatively, if you're thinking about going away somewhere, to have a brief idea of the time to go.
I much prefer leafing through a beautiful book like this rather than researching "when to go" on websites. It is the "big picture" of a country rather than east/west coast specific, but that's all you want or need if you're planning a fantasy trip, or if you're just looking for some ideas.
I've got the hardbook version which I think is better than the paperback one as it somehow makes it more "special" (without sounding naff I hope).
