This book proved to be a lifesaver for me. It is extremely well set out, and sub-divided for ease of use. It includes sections that cover areas you are likely to come across on a day-to-day basis such as 'greetings', 'at the market', 'at the post office' and 'emergencies', to name but a few. But as well as useful phrases, it also gives a summary of the chapter explaining in more detail the way of life. For example, before the section on shopping, there is a paragraph covering the art of bartering, and before the 'eating out' section, Moroccan hospitality is explained so the reader is in the know when he arrives at the restaurant or the guest's house. The first edition was rather better. It was better laid out and easier to read. The typeface in the new edition is smaller, the maps are smaller, and my subjective impression is that material on the main sites, Leptis and Sabratha, is less extensive than it was. Frankly it should be rather more extensive! Otherwise it is reasonably up to the standard of most such guides, although I concur with the reviewer who said that it's erroneous in parts.

My first impression was that the author had been 'got at' by the Libyan authorities. I particularly noticed the omission of comments about hotels that would throw you out of your room unless you agreed to buy their foul-tasting evening meals have gone, for instance; or mention of sleepy officials ... The first edition was rather better. It was better laid out and easier to read. Jordan (Lonely Planet Country Guide)

A good country guide. Jordan is a small country which has many sights to see, the book is not very comprehensive and only provides details of sights in a brief format, which suits me as I don't like to be have every detail thrown at me.

As with all lonely Planet guides, this book is much more aimed at backpackers giving all the transport and budget details you'll need. I found a few details were significantly out of date and resulted in expensive taxi rides and some confused looks from the locals. Check the lonely planet website for updates.

If you are deciding whether to get the Rough Guide or the Lonely Planet (I used both for my trip) then you need to decide what you need to know. The rough Guide is very good at giving you ... Read More:

I wonder where LP will set its own limit on the destinations they cover. Being excellent and nr.1 in guidebooks of unexplored, less known or not well organized places, they also have written books about places like Malta (and The Canary Islands) where one can go easy on your own without a guidebook like this one.
About Malta there are numerous guidebooks with detailled descriptions of the places, and that is what people ever need to visit Malta. Most people will be there in some sort of package tour already anyway. Once there the locals speak english and the island is so well organized you do not need a LP to find out what to do, how to get around etc. The tourist office is also extremely well providing brochures, maps of everything you need before and ... Despite an unusually high number of flaws, this is nevertheless a book that will help you get the most out of your time in Andalucia.

Perhaps I just expect too much of Lonely Planet (LP), but it's their own fault. They've stood by me so many times in so many different places in the past that I was beginning to take everything they told me as The Only Advice In Town. So when I arrived in Seville I quickly got into the LP groove and hit La Bella Estrella, a "jazz bar".

Well, perhaps I'd arrived the day they buried the proprietor, but there was no jazz going on there, so off I went to Naima Café Jazz, happily only about five doors away down Calle Trajan. A bit better, but still not the place I expected based on LP's description. ... Read More:

Pants. Avoid unless you are specifically going to both countries and cant bear to carry two books.

Fairly good info for Ethiopia's historical circuit but even there the writing style is appalling and gushy with far too many completely!! innapropriate!!! exclamation marks!!!!

Is also now quite outdated - factor prices up by X2 and features several hotels which no longer exist and restaurants which have gone markedly downhill.

The book really falls down on its claims to inform about Dijibouti and Eritrea however, which are cursory and just feel as if they have been tacked on in a cynical attempt to tap a market.

Luckily I wasn't totally put off by your previous reviewer who complained bitterly about the mis-reference to Timbuctu and I bought the book!

I had previously purchased the 2nd edition of this guide and wasn't too impressed by it. However, this third edition is by a new author who has lived in Senegal and it has been completely revised. It is full of useful practical and background information for the curious traveller, even for those that have only booked a package to the Gambian Coastal resorts. Armchair travellers should find it an interesting read as well.

I am shortly going on a 14 day escorted adventure tour to Senegal and Gambia, and if the Amazon review system allows a second bite at the cherry, I hope to report on how useful and accurate the book ... Read More:
