I've just spent three months travelling round Sri Lanka with both the Rough Guide and the Lonely Planet guide. I have to say, that the Rough Guide proved, on almost all counts, to be the much better option.
Obviously neither guide is perfect - the Rough Guide is excellent on the South coast, but not so good when you travel further north, and both guides fail to give much useful information (or the correct information!) about how to travel around by public bus. However, the Lonely Planet guide is pretty inaccurate throughout. Many of the maps are wrong, for instance, and it fails to actually give a balanced view of whether place is worth visiting. Even if some people might consider the Rough Guide to be too negative, I found that ... Read More:

The main city map was perfect, we ripped the cover off and took it everywhere with us. Simple to use and fairly concise in terms of the info about each entry. Nicely divided into sections for shops, food, highlights etc. Gave some nice ideas for walking tours. I personally would recommend this one over most others for its ease of use and simple entries.

I bought this ready for a trip to Yellowstone National Park this year and hoped it would help me get some great shots.
I have to say I wasn't disppointed by this book, although my pics never matched up to Andy's.....
It is clearly laid out with sections covering equipment, setting, techniques and where/when to go. None of it is patronising and there is an element of humour in it too.
I would recommend this to anyone planning on photographing wildlife either on Safari or their back garden.

I took this book with me when I visited Russia for the first time with absolutely zero knowledge of Russian. This book was invaluable! Due to the nature of the Russian language, being one that is spelt as it is spoken, I was using words and phrases from this book and being mistaken for a local! The problem was I could not understand the responses I got many times, but that is not a fault of the book.
The book also lists words and phrases in Cyrillic, which means it's extremely easy to learn to read in Russia and I was able to read nearly all of the Cyrllic alphabet within the day!
On my journey on the Trans-Siberian railway I shared my carriage with a native Russian from Omsk. He had only a bare basic understanding of English ... Read More:

I'm writing this from Dubai Airport on the way back from my first but not, I hope, my last visit to Iran. I was in Kish Island (disappointing) and in Shiraz and Persepolis (absolutely wonderful). I found the book really helpful, practical and accurate. The Iranian people are every bit as warm hearted, open and hospitable as the book suggests. They, like the Americans (another people I love), are saddled with an idiot as a leader - though we can hope that may change in January in the US! The Iranians are much more outspoken on politics than I expected. Several people said to me that they hope that the Iranian elections next year will produce a leader (ie not Ajhmedinejad and his cronies), who can move forward with Obama. If you love hospitality, curiosity, fun ... Read More:
