I got this for Christmas and I was very disappointed. There appears to be no correlation between the titles of the chapters and the descriptions. Apparently the Inner Hebrides are in the Firth of Clyde. I felt like the author had found a formula 50 places before you die - find a few people to interview. I was expecting to find the best places - not just some places to sail.

having left our copy of the Rough Guide to Vietnam in a taxi in Saigon during the first week of our trip, we had no option but to purchase a copy of Lonely Planet. We were very disappointed, if you stuck to the Lonely planet, you'd only see a quarter mile radius of where you land, and miss out on so much that vietnam offers. It felt as if the author lands at the local backpacker haunt, then does door to door reviews of the closest hotels, bars and restaurants. The reviews also seem to act as a reason for a price hike as prices don't reflect what the lonely planet suggests. Yes, there's inflation, but it was published only last year and the prices really did seem way off, even though we were traveling during the low season.

I've bought this book for many friends and all have enjoyed its wonderful description of the scottish islands. I've sailed with it as an indispensible reference and toured the islands by car with it on the passenger seat! Great reference book with descriptons, maps and facts on all the islands, even the smallest one. A real gem.

Took my fiance to Paris recently and bought this book for the trip.
Have always been impressed when I've taken one of the Lonely Planet guides on my travels, and this book maintained the high standards that I've come to expect from them.
Doesn't matter if you know a bit about where you are visiting or if you are completely clueless - everything you could need to know is in here.
Well written, easy to use, full of useful information, and yet small enough to fit in a coat pocket.
Highly recommend.

One of the best birthday presents I've ever received....
It's not a book to replace individual lonely planet guides, but is a brilliant way to chase away winter blues, or alternatively, if you're thinking about going away somewhere, to have a brief idea of the time to go.
I much prefer leafing through a beautiful book like this rather than researching "when to go" on websites. It is the "big picture" of a country rather than east/west coast specific, but that's all you want or need if you're planning a fantasy trip, or if you're just looking for some ideas.
I've got the hardbook version which I think is better than the paperback one as it somehow makes it more "special" (without sounding naff I hope).

My husband and I spent 4 days driving the south of Iceland in August 2007 and this book was great. The maps were spot on and the recommendations were spot on. We particularly loved the lobster soup at the Saegreifinn restuarant in Reykjavik and tried the whale meat kebab. Using this guide and the recommendations in it, we managed to go dog sledding, snow mobiling and whale watching. The only thing we missed was seeing Puffins, however they apparently left 2 weeks before we arrived, so we can't put that blame on the guide. Definitely the best guide out there for Iceland, highly recommended.

"Compiled by Steve Clark, bestselling author of The Only Fools and Horses Story, and television expert Shoba Vazirani, it reveals the settins for dozens of top television shows. From Emmerdale to Lewis and from Last of the Sumer Wine to Life on Mars The British Television Location Guide gives details of how you can visit the places you have seen so many times on the box."
Beautifully presented and well researched - this is a must for those who enjoy behind the scenes information. Wonderful colour photographs grace the pages next to information about your TV favourites. Essential.

Like many others, I bought the book because I had thoroughly enjoyed the TV programme. The TV programme covered areas of the coastline which I have enjoyed visting - but they were missing from the book! The pictures, though sometimes excellent photographs, were nowhere near as good as the TV images. The worst aspect for me, however, was the way in which the text (fairly uninspired when compared with the TV commentary) was printed in a sans-serif font over a grey background showing a map of the British coast. It is therefore very difficult to read, and, as pointed out above, not really worth the effort. Why could the BBC not have produced a book in the same league as the one accompanying the British Isles - natural history. A missed opportunity!

Having used the Florence and Venice volumes earlier in the year, when I was asked to travel to Rome, the DK Eyewitness guide was my first port of call. I am used to its clear and ordered style, the wonderful aerial illustrations of particular areas (most useful when lost!), and, given the amount of space it would otherwise take), the information details for each venue.

This is just the sort of guidebook I've been waiting for. Packed full of places to stay and places to visit, inspired by 'good food and artisan producers.... craftmanship and community, landscape and history'. The book is divided into geographical regions with useful maps so that you can plan your time (or dip in and out as you wish). As with all Sawday guides, the places reviewed have a thorough write up. Stunning photos are sprinkled through the book..... A book to curl up with and plan your slow adventures. Just gorgeous!
