This is lavishly illustrated book that I suspect will appeal more to those who are thinking about where to start diving. It is really a coffee-table book. More serious divers are more likely to pick up a copy of the "Diver Travel Guide". The "Diver Travel Guide" is updated annually or at least very regularly. I'm fairly sure that I picked up a complimentary copy with "Diver" magazine but it can certainly be bought separately.

The "Diver Travel Guide" provides a concise description of each destination followed by a fact file which summarises the relative cost; water temperature and an indication of what thickness wetsuit to wear; visa requirements and inoculations. I have used this map for two trips around NZ, and will use it again for my third trip later this year as it is still in great condition considering the daily folding and unfolding that you inevitably do as you travel the length and breadth of this fantastic country. As it is small and lightweight it is ideal just to tuck in your suitcase or backpack no need to carry a big bulky map around.

A must for any NZ traveller, at a reasonable price.

I am so pleased that the "This Is" series of books by Miroslav Sasek are back in print. Elsewhere, the comments on Sasek's work have been "only good for children up to 3 years!" Well, I'm in my fifties and I intend to collect the ones I most enjoyed as a child, such as This Is San Francisco and This Is Rome. In an age of electronic wizardry Sasek's books stand out as a reminder of a time when books were the chief form of entertainment and education.

Sasek's art and wit are truly original and unique. He manages to take the reader on a journey through both the landmarks of his subject and the everday minutiae that makes up a country and its culture. Each book is a remarkable achievement.

If you're looking for a budget orientated guidebook then this isn't it. A quick peak at the budget accomodation section of any place reveals only one or two truly budget options before prices rise exponentially and quickly threaten to overwhelm the midrange section. A typical example will be a hotel/hostel for 60Dh alongside one for 200Dh - an unlikely budget range except for those who have been in the sun too long or those who have over-indulged in their ilicit booze stash.

Having used guidebooks almost continually for the past year the number of map related mistakes in this guidebook is above average. Considering how much time you spend navigating confusing Medinas searching for a hotel, this is the one area where you want your guidebook ... Read More:

If time is tight, or you just like to arrive at a holiday destination very well prepared, a guidebook is a valuable and important investment. So choosing the right one is crucial.

Whilst I suspect that "Time Out" and "Lonely Planet" books probably sell in greater volume, having looked through them both I'm extremely glad I opted instead to use this Eyewitness Travel Guide for my recent trip to Paris. It helped me make the most of my trip.

As with most guidebooks this breaks down Paris into a series of districts - but then very clearly labels the key attractions, how to find them and even proposes short walks that will enable you to get the most out of your time in that area.

I think its the Daily Mail who describe this book as 'hilarious' - but its far from that I can assure you. I was expecting a lighthearted jaunt around the NZ islands but instead got the cynical ramblings from someone who has very little good to say about the country he has made his home for many years. I ploughed through it though and it was worth it when I did come across the funny bit just a chapter or so from the end. So if you're after a book to advise you on all the negative things to look out for then this is just the job, otherwise best avoided I think.....
