Having bought this book to plug the many gaps in my knowledge on British racecourses, I was delighted to discover a book I found difficult to put down. Stephen Cartmell's warm and witty style was highly informative and very engaging.

The book is full of interesting facts not just about the racecourses but describing the surrounding areas for each one, enabling the casual reader to build up a real picture. Those who enjoy sampling on-course catering have found a sure ally in Stephen Cartmell, as descriptions of the food on offer pepper each piece.

Not just a racing guide then, but a travel book, a food guide and a snapshot of British social history. Be warned if you read it on public transport enroute to a race meeting ... Read More:

We have recently been to Krakow for a long weekend and are so pleased we bought this book before we went. The book really is fantastic! The book has maps, resturant and bar reviews, overviews of museums, where to shop, suggested walking tours, where to catch buses from history etc!!!

We definatley made the most out of our trip by taking this book! We were able to find our way around easily because of the detailed maps! We also ate at a couple of the resturants reviewed in the book - which were excellent! We were able to save money on visiting the salt mines by taking the bus there ourselves rather than go on an organised tour.

Pretty pointless yarn...the main problem is the author and his use of non stop so-called "Irish Wit" from start to finish of the book which just becomes a big turn-off after the first chapter. If you are thinking of subjecting yourself this nonsense - be warned..

Bought this book because of the good review it had on Amazon. It proved to be invaluable on our recent holiday in Ireland and I would heartily recommend it.

After the low point of my relationship with Lonely Planet (Montréal and Québec City), I was pleased to have my faith restored in the imprint with this excellent guide.

As you'd expect, author Damien Simonis sings the city's praises, but it's never over the top and, let's face it, how many cities can you name that can beat Barcelona? (Of the three I can think of, two are Spanish.) This is a well-measured talking up of a city that needs no talking up.

A number of elements make Barcelona for me: accessibility of live music, art, food and language.

Taking the last first, this is the only place I found Simonis indecisive, and I have to admit I'm still confused myself, but generally speaking I get away with my self-taught ... Read More:

While I still say don't drive in France without it, the little symbol for Michelin-listed Camping Sites has been removed. This is a big disappointment for the camping fraternity.

I suppose SatNav is taking over (some campsite websites give their Long & Lat now), but you still a need a decent map to get the overal picture and work out alternatives when the SatNav fails, tries to send you the wrong way up a one way street or is just plain out of date.

This is your decent map of roads in France!
