I own one of the pubs listed, the George and Devonshire, in Chiswick. It is the oldest pub in Chiswick, built some time prior to 1657, and we still trade in the original building. However, Bob Steel commits the cardinal error of not checking his facts by casually stating the the pub is s '20th century re-build', which would appear to be obvious nonsense to anyone who has actually visited the place! If Bob Steel did not visit the George and Devonshire, which is Casque Mark accredited for the quality of our real ale, how many other pubs included in the book were also not visited?

I am surprised at the negative feedback here. As a consistent user of Lonely Planet guides, I have to say that this ranked as one of the more useful country guides i have come across. Writing guidebooks must be a very tricky business - it is necessary to include such a vast quantity of information, while trying simultaneously to capture the feel and mood of a country in such a way that people know what to expect back home. This particular guide does an excellent job in this respect.
I spent one month travelling from Pretoria to Cape Town, taking a winding route through Swaziland and Lesotho. I had no schedule and went where I wanted when I wanted. And perhaps it is for this kind of travelling that this guide is most suitable - it doesn't ... Read More:

This truly is a thorough and comprehensive travel guide, giving readers not only a great idea of what to expect when they visit Cuba, but also a great deal of other information regarding the scenery of Cuba, it's social and political history, it's key political figures, and a wealth of information on it's art and culture.
All of which is rich and fascinating, creating a picture of an intriguing country of great warmth and openness; a country which is well worth visiting, if only for the pure white sand and the nature which is a veritable feast for poets and painters. This book will tell you pretty much everything you could possibly need to know about Cuba. Read it and read about an entirely different way of life.

Far, far superior to the Lonely Planet guide, which (as usual) seems to have been written sitting in a bar somewhere, relying on second-hand information. The Rough Guide, on the other hand, feels fresh, vibrant and accurate. Far more comprehensive, it explores places slightly off the beaten track, has far better restaurant listings and is much easier to use generally. Lonely Planet is trendy and ubiquitous, but after a back-to-back test, you have to wonder why. The Rough Guide has far more on the history and culture of the country, and is far more readable. One feels it has been written by people of intelligence and culture; the LP, on the other hand, feels as though it has been scribbled by semi-literate back-packers. Perhaps therein lies the great difference, ... Read More:

I have tavelled all over the world using Rough Guides and Lonely Planet - I usually favour Rough Guide but in this case found it disappointing! There didn't seem to be any personal recommendations - it was 'generic' !!

I was very excited to get this book - one I have been promising myself for some time.
The book is very good for information - EXCEPT - the new version has decided to leave out opening times - NOW - MY LAST REVIEW WAS GIVING THIS BOOK A HARD TIME - I HAVE NOW ACTUALLY USED IT. IT IS USEFUL BUT I STILL STAND FIRM ON THE OPENEING TIMES - SURE 9-5 OR EVEN 10-6 YOU SHOULD BE OK - BUT OUTSIDE OF THOSE HOURS - LOW ON PETROL? STARVING HUNGRY? DON'T RISK GOING OFF THE MOTORWAY - STICK TO THE 24 HOUR STOPS.

This is a large book- over 1000 pages, and it aims to be a single, comprehensive guide to Britain. It begins with a section on travel advice such as tips about safety, information about currency and safety and information about travelling to Britain and within Britain. Basically, information for before you travel. But I would question the appeal of this kind of printed material. All this information can be found out quite easily online, and online sources are naturally much more up to date.
In the intro, and throughout the book, they make remarkable generalisations. "English pubs general..." " The British public usually..." I hope people don't take this too seriously!
Also this book is not re-written, it is simply updated. As such some sections ... Read More:

Having bought this book to plug the many gaps in my knowledge on British racecourses, I was delighted to discover a book I found difficult to put down. Stephen Cartmell's warm and witty style was highly informative and very engaging.
The book is full of interesting facts not just about the racecourses but describing the surrounding areas for each one, enabling the casual reader to build up a real picture. Those who enjoy sampling on-course catering have found a sure ally in Stephen Cartmell, as descriptions of the food on offer pepper each piece.
Not just a racing guide then, but a travel book, a food guide and a snapshot of British social history. Be warned if you read it on public transport enroute to a race meeting - it's highly likely that you'll ... Read More:
