We have done several walks in the book and have enjoyed them all. The instructions are clear (and updates are posted on the website), and all the information you need is in there. There are great tips on where to have lunch and this often turns into the real highlight of any walk (that long awaited glass of cider on a hot summer's day in the garden of a country pub) ...
If you like walking and exploring the glorious English countryside, this is the book you need to inspire you and take you away from the London smog!

I browed the 2003 edition of this book from my local library and thought that is was good. I liked the layout (still do) thought that it had a lot of useful information mixed in with pictures. So when a 2008 edition came out I though great I will have the most up to date information with some added pictures. Or so I thought when I got the book I found that it is nearly identical to the 2003 one. There is only one extra page of information in the history. Flicking though the remainder of the pages I found that they are all the same, same pictures, some of the maps have been re coloured, and most of the text is identical too. The only thing I could see that was different is the back part that had a longer list of places to stay and eat. So all in ... Read More:

This book is very predictable - formula-written. Like it is by a committee not a person.
LP's great when you first start traveling. But now I want more information about the places that locals go to and the more unusual locations, hotels and restaurants.
With this book you know you are always with the crowd whether you want it or not.
And the cultural information is very thin and unimaginative. The only thing that is really good are the maps and the great binding.

since our trip to scotland, i have bought book after book of photographs of scotland, trying to find one that captures what we saw. this one does. when we first drove into the highlands, the beauty brought me to tears. you turn round and round and take pictures that can't possibly capture what you are seeing. well, colin prior has captured scotland in this book, and i am so grateful to him!

Loads of information on many confusing areas of moving to or living in Australia. Much better than my first purchase 'Going to Live in Australia' (Neilson & Collins).
Recommended.

After using the Lonely Planet's 'South East Asia on a Shoestring' I was sceptical of buying another of LP's guides. However for some reason I found myself with 'Central America on a Shoestring' and it actually turned out to be a very handy travel companion. The information was up to date (probably as we somehow managed to be one of the first people to get our hands on it) and the writers remained nicely neutral to cater for various ages and travel desires. Definitely recommended.

I bought the 4th edition (2006) of this book, not as a travel companion, but to help me decide whether to take a trip to California. The hotel prices are more up to date now, and this is one factor which was important to me as one of my aims in reading this book was to assess the cost of a possible trip. I found the introductory sections on Environment, History and Culture really interesting, I think the thoroughness of the background information is one of the areas in which LP excel. I looked at the practicalities - food, transport, etc., and I read the sections on San Francisco and the National Parks. Despite finding the descriptions of the National Parks very tempting, the book has not yet persuaded me that California is the place for me. ... Read More:
