I bought this book for my 1st trip to HK (about 2 weeks ago). I found it great at 1st that it comes with a pull-out map but realise after; everywhere I go there were maps provided for including the hotel+tubes! The eating places suggested were over-rated and some of the local eats like the famous local HK pastry "wife biscuit" or "wanton noodles" were never mentioned which seems rather tragic.
Also, the nightlife suggested by the book was also so-so........ Instead i got to know about the hottest club (Club Beijing) from a local hairdresser doing my hair. The book also failed to mention that there was a hot bar right above Hotel LKF with fantastic view + the people tend to be dressier on Saturday than Friday!

I'm a fan of Lonely Planet guidebooks because, when it comes to the backpacker/individual traveller guides, I think they're the best you can get. They do have a lot of practical info and most of the stuff is accurate and helpful. However, I found that you have to approach them with some, say, pinch of salt. In the case of this guide, the I found the prices for accomodation + occassionally sights quite inaccurate (i.e. almost always higher) - I went to India in September 2008. Another thing I found slightly irritating was the language. The vocabulary was much more high-brow and, frankly, showy and exalted (too many superlatives, too many adjectives, etc.), than in the other guides I've used (Turkey, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia); my friends ... Dont go to venice without this book , it has everything you need . We brought this along with the Lonely Planet Map and they were both excellent. Venice can be really busy but this book has many suggestions of where to spend your time. A perfect guide to a beautiful city.

I know it's my personal bug-bear, but as with most guidebooks on Spain the Murcia region isn't given the same treatment as other regions - just 10 pages (that wrongly suggest that all we've got there is beaches and golf courses) to cover the whole region while Valencia gets 50! That said, I like the Lonely Planet guides, they are beautifully produced and the colour photos are always outstanding.

A fabulous LP guide to a fabulous country. Thorough, accurate and honest reviews of everything and anything. AND, unlike other lonely planets, there is a wicked sense of humour and healthy cynicism. These guys dont take themselves too seriously!! Highly recommended.

I bought this, along with the Rough guide to Hong Kong & Macau and the Rough guide DIRECTIONS: Hong Kong & Macau (as I couldn't make up my mind which seemed best!) and have to say, this is the one I used on my trip. The pull out map is a lifesaver & I would have been completely lost without it. The book is divided up into sections by geographical area and then tells you what to see and do/where to eat and drink there. I found this much easier to use than the rough guide, which had an "eating" section - you then had to decide what type of food you were in the mood for and then see if any of the restaurants in that category were in the district you were visiting. Confusing! Obviously, the book is titchy which is great for stuffing in yourr ... Read More:

I recently went to New York for the first time and this book went everywhere with me. I first opened it on the flight over and couldn't put it down. The street maps in the back and the subway map in the front were invaluable. The Brit Tips were especially useful and the section on 'what to see and do' prompted me to take the Gray Line Tours which were fantastic value and showed me so much more than I could have seen by myself. (Take the 'Night Loop' tour over to Brooklyn to view the Manhattan skyline at night - spectacular!) Even my British friend that I stayed with kept borrowing it from me, so it's now looking a bit worn. The street maps are clearly marked with all the attractions, buildings and places to see which really helped me to 'map out' an itinerary ... Read More:
