A fascinating and enjoyable book - part travelogue, part history and part autobiography.
Anyone who shares in the excitement of seeing the first snowfall of winter or looks forward to a week on the piste will love this book.

I am a massive fan of the tribe TV series, and it only seemed logical to get the book after watching it, so after receiving it I sat down and read the whole thing through, which was no challenge due to the books fantastic writing and incisive reporting.
The best aspect I found was that the book does not re-tell the series, more so it fills in the background for each tribe, the people behind the series, and the events that were either not captured on camera or deemed not suitable for broadcast - it delves into the less glamorous side of filming, the ailments, the problems, the danger, while keeping the nostalgic story of each tribe intact
A superb read and as stated above, a great partner to the TV series

I'm a little reluctant to admit to watching Top Gear as a guilty pleasure, even though half the time I haven't the foggiest idea what they are talking about! It was on this basis that I bought this James May book, hoping that things would become a little clearer. James May seems like the perfect teacher, a lot less abrasive than Jeremy Clarkson and looking a bit more like a science boffin than Richard Hammond.
I found this book hugely enjoyable. The short articles mean that it is easy to pick up and put down and he covers a range of topics from haunted car parks to how to solve disputes with van drivers and from cup-holders in cars to camper van holidays.
There were times when I was still lost. For example; 'The BTCC ... Read More:

I must be honest and say that I started this book in tandem with another just because I didn't think I'd be terribly interested in the subject matter, much as I love Bryson. By the end of the second chapter, I wanted to book a ticket on the next flight to Perth. The flora, fauna and folks that inhabit this wondrous country intrigue me strangely.
Bill Bryson is one of the funniest writers I have ever encountered. I find myself reading bits aloud at the slightest hint of encouragement. I challenge anyone to read his discussion of running through a park trying to get away from some scary dogs, and ending up in an unsuspecting housewife's back garden, without laughing out loud. If you can get through that section without giggling, you have ... Read More:

We bought this atlas as a replacement for our 1999 AZ version. In comparison, we found it less useful for our purpose (mainly for touring). Particularly annoying is the lack of landscape information (topography, woodland) and the absence of the location of smaller settlements. On the plus side, in comparison with the AZ version, it does separately distinguish National Trust properties from others. However, we did not check out the current AZ version before buying the AA atlas, so it may also do so now. The additional information on satnav references and the location of permenant speed cameras may be useful for more gadget-minded, less law-abiding motorists.

I got through it fairly quickly, which should mean that I found it sufficiently captivating. If you have a passion for motorcycles, it helps. I was somewhat disappointed that it was not as detailed as I expected. I mean, these two intrepid fellows went round the world and could only find enough material to fill 380 pages!
Still, I don't want to be overly critical. It was worth the read, I suppose.

I had the choice between this book and the readers digest equivalent. The Book People were at work so all I got was a quick look through and decided on this one pretty much just down to the fact this book had little maps which provided an overveiw of each walk - I have to have maps wherever I go because I will get lost otherwise.
I got back to my desk, had a look at reviews on Amazon for both books and was pleased when the Readers Digest one didnt seem to do too great but this was then blown away because this book had NO reveiws.. and to be honest I don't know why.
When I got home I had a good look through and I was very pleased this was my choice.. it is so well thought out. I'm not particularly into walking but I do go camping now ... Read More:
