I had some American friends visit and I bought this book in preparation. It is a wonderful read and once we began to walk it proved a very useful guide to the city. I learned things about London (I have lived there in on and off for my whole life) that I never realised.

Corsica is a much larger and more varied island than the first time visitor might expect so a good guidebook is essential, (Corsica is roughly the same size as Wales). The Cadogan Guide has an excellent balance of reference and background information, with enough detailed text to allow informed decisions on where to visit. However, some simple local maps to accompany the guide's recommendations would have been helpful as even a Michelin roadmap struggles to make sense of Corsica's rural roads, leading to a few wrong turns on the way when hunting for that remote beach or tower, (not a real problem if you've adopted a suitably chilled out holiday mood). I'd recommend Corsica to those who love the rural and less developed regions of mainland France ... Read More:

This is by no means the best of an excellent guide book series. Cadogan are guide books for those who do not merely want a guide book yellow pages - they are well-written, contain quirky and amusing information on and off the beaten track.

Likemost of the others in the series, Southern Spain does not look as good as some of its competitors. Don't judge any of them by their geography textbook style covers....

Surely a couple of hundred pages allows for a bit of space for historical interest in between restaurant and hotel recommendations. As far as I'm aware it's this historical information that most people look for in a guidebook, and certainly the avid followers of Michael Pauls and Dana Facaros whose books for Cadogan in Italy are the sort of witty, wise, insightful works that really bring a city to life. Their small selection of restaurant recommendations are pretty good for a traveller looking for the genuine article, but when it comes to seeing the sights nothing beats Cadogan. Except the Companion Guides.

I know it's terrible to pick on such things, but there were many, many misspellings of Spanish places, names, etc. It made me wonder if they were so careless about checking such simple things, what else did they not check?

Rough guides and lonely planets annoy me because they unceremoniously dump factoids upon you, and are often culturally insensitive. (They serve a purpose for basic information though, so sometimes it is advantageous to put up with them.) This book is different. I expect it will amaze and delight you if you go at it expecting just another travel guide. It is learned, incisive, and even wildly humorous at times. Like a knowledgeable friend. The best!
