If you haven't come across the Sawdays Guides before you are certainly missing out. We've stayed in over 60 Bed and Breakfasts, holiday homes and hotels recommended by these guides and we've never had a problem with any of them. To say these guides (and the people that compile them) do their job well is an understatement. French holiday Homes is a real gem, well researched and full of the best that France has to offer.
As with all Sawday's guides it is well laid out and easy to find what you're looking for. It has a good selection of properties covering the whole of France. Importantly the properties covered in the guide are affordable and always good value for money. Prices start from under 200 Euros, though if you want your ... Read More:

I used this book for a 2 week vacation Aug-Sep '07 travelling through Turkey and on the whole the places it recommended to stay were very good. On average beds were comfortable with clean white linen, and the bathrooms clean and in a good condition. What I liked also, was that each B&B seemed to have a real character of its own including that of the host! The breakfasts were good value too.
The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because the book clearly needs updating (which should happen in 2008): prices are no longer accurate e.g. on average rooms are an extra 20 Turkish Lire a night on top of the printed price and one place - Villa Carla at Datca was no longer open. So calling ahead to make a reservation is best if you can. ... Read More:

Why did I title my review like this? Quite simply, the reason is that I have the previous edition and normally would not dream of updating with the previous version only just over a year old. However, when I saw in the foreword that there were around 50 additions in the latest, I couldn't resist (particularly given the current good offer on Amazon!). The main reason I couldn't resist is that a couple of months ago I stayed in the best hotel (note, not the one with the most stars) I have ever stayed in in this country. I'm not going to give away where it was but it lived up to all of the Sawday's promises 'nothing dull', 'delightful people' and so on. It was wonderful.

A wide range of pubs and inns are described in this reliable and well laid-out guide. We've used it on many occasions on our travels and have found wonderful places to eat and drink that otherwise we'd have passed by. We keep a copy in the car. The Mulberry Tree in Wrightington, Lancs was a special find. Well up to the standard of other Sawday guides that we'd also recommend.

There are those who travel because they must - and dismal concrete boxes line the highways to house them on such travels. But if the object of your journey is unashamed pleasure, and moreover warm and joyous interaction with the British Isles, then pack Alastair Sawday in your glovebox. Ivy-covered cottages, gaunt remote castles, Highlands retreats you can access only by boat (with details how) - Sawday's Britain is a cheerful place on a human scale, magnificently devoid of Arndale Centres or multi-storey car-parks. The photography is inspiring, and the witty write-ups catch the individuality of each property. Thorough and practical maps, a glossary of saxon place-names, and 2-3 entirely spoof entries elevate this from a mere list of hotels - in ... Read More:

but if you are a keen winter sports fan and want to avoid the usual 'package places' then click to buy this book immediately. Covering the mountains of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland it provides page upon page of desirable places to stay with useful details of distances to piste/lift etc alongside each one. One of the other aspects of these Sawdays guides I find most useful are the quick reference indices at the back of the books, in this particular one covering things such as 'one hour or less from airport' (for those snatched weekends) and'Rooms for 100 euros or less'. Lovely photos of all the properties with accurate descriptions (they are all visited), I never use anything other than Sawday's guides for accommodation now. Most ... Read More:

My family & I live in India and run a Travel Consultancy business for visitors to India and Bhutan. We have sent our guests to many parts of the country, visiting hotels we have discovered ourselves and also those run by our relatives & friends.
After having bought this guide book we were pleased to discover that many of our most favored places are listed beautifully.
I can highly recommend this book to anyone planning on traveling extensively in India & looking for just the right place to stay.

Having used Alistair Sawdays books before to find accommodation in this country, and always been delighted with all the places we have stayed, on recent trip to Paris I immediately purchased Alistair Sawday's Paris Hotels. After browsing through I selected a few hotels and went on to their web sites to book. The hotel we stayed in was exactly as described in the book and we had a wonderful time. I would have no hesitation in recommending th book as I found it very easy to use

A recent significant birthday and gifts of book vouchers allowed me to indulge my Sawday's addiction and add this one to my collection. Now all I need is the time to go and visit more of these places. The rise in popularity in the National Gardens Scheme and village open gardens days seems to indicate that looking at other people's gardens is fast becoming a national pastime and if, like me, it's one you enjoy, then this book is for you. As with all the Sawday's guides the production is superb, well set-out, good (accurate) descriptions (I think these are written by the Sawday's inspectors rather than the places themselves) and beautiful photography. In the two places from this book I have so far stayed at, both sets of hosts were only too ... Read More:
