Special places to stay is an excellent companion to any journey around Spain, but it can prove a little dangerous, as its easy to start getting tempted towards exploring some of the more expensive options. although the book does cover a wide range of accomodation from casa rurals right through to converted monastries, it is certainly for the most part not for the budget traveller, although many of the places covered offer very good value for money, and the comprehensive details provided with each special place gives extensive details on what meals and so on are included, and occasionaly recomending specialities.

This book is the most useful book I have ever read - it allows you to see the 'real' Spain in a way that travel guides never will.

I will never travel again without a Sawday guide!

Guy Hunter-Watts has done a fantastic job - and is wonderfully descriptive and a pleasure to read. A Big Thank You!

Amongst those we stayed in we particularly enjoyed Hotel Le Domaine aux Quat'Saisons, Carcassonne [...]; a haven of exceptional good taste, comforts and style, not to mention the delicious food.

What a fantastic book, full of places to stay that you would not find through the routes of any travel agents. I have already booked up into 2 of the places for my next trip to Portugal at the end of October 2001. I will add more after that.

Why did I title my review like this? Quite simply, the reason is that I have the previous edition and normally would not dream of updating with the previous version only just over a year old. However, when I saw in the foreword that there were around 50 additions in the latest, I couldn't resist (particularly given the current good offer on Amazon!). The main reason I couldn't resist is that a couple of months ago I stayed in the best hotel (note, not the one with the most stars) I have ever stayed in in this country. I'm not going to give away where it was but it lived up to all of the Sawday's promises 'nothing dull', 'delightful people' and so on. It was wonderful.

Having bought several B&B guides for a touring holiday of Ireland, we found this guide to be the most useful in terms of accurate descriptions, good directions and ease of use. We like our home comforts, but also like to find places with character, quirkiness and with friendly hosts. This guide took the guesswork out of the selection process. We stayed at 4 places within the guide and were more than delighted with every one. We would definitely use other 'Special Places to Stay' guides in the future.

This book is a breath of fresh air amongst the many B&B listings on the market. Rather than focus on whether establishments have the requisite number of facilities to qualify for a certain grading, the emphasis is on the friendliness of the hosts, the comfort of the beds, the tastiness of the breakfast or the quality of the views... If you are genuinely looking for a 'special' place to stay then you need look no further than here. We have recently had wonderful stays at smart, comfortable places in Devon and Bath thanks to the recommendations of Mr Sawday and his team.

I always used to wonder how people found those gorgeous, individual hotels - but now I know.
Planning a trip to the north of Portugal with a copy of Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay offered an irresistible choice. The quality of the accommodation was everything the book led me to expect - and more. The only drawback is that with so much superb choice, I'll have to go back again and again to experience the places I couldn't fit in the first time around.

With this book in your hand, planning a trip is almost as good as being there. If there's a 'Special Places to Stay guide to the country you want to visit, get it!
