Meccano Spykee The Wi-Fi Spy Robot

I've had the Spykee robot for a few days and here are my first impressions, positive and negative.

The robot took me a few hours to build. I'm sure you could build it quicker but I took my time. The instruction manual is pretty good and once it's built it only takes a short time to get the thing working over WiFi - assuming you understand WiFi and how to use and configure wireless networks. It's a good idea to follow the suggestion of getting the robot working in 'local' mode, then in 'local remote' mode, then full remote mode. The robot has its own inbuilt wireless transmitter for 'local' mode and a receiver for other modes. I have to agree that this is a GREAT product and introduction to children to taking care of any future pets. Yes you do have to get spring water and yes you do have to clean the water and maintain it at a certain temperature but frankly as parents we do much crazier and complicated things for our children, so this is a no brainer. We did not get a lamp! They survived with the temperature of our house. It is true that they do eat each other and the last one left which we called STAR GIRL was huge - but we made it fun for our boys and it was a great experience for them. STAR GIRL survived for roughly the 90 days.

We will start again with some new ones..... now to think of their names!

I have to agree that this is a GREAT product and introduction to children to taking care of any future pets. Yes you do have to get spring water and yes you do have to clean the water and maintain it at a certain temperature but frankly as parents we do much crazier and complicated things for our children, so this is a no brainer. We did not get a lamp! They survived with the temperature of our house. It is true that they do eat each other and the last one left which we called STAR GIRL was huge - but we made it fun for our boys and it was a great experience for them. STAR GIRL survived for roughly the 90 days.

We will start again with some new ones..... now to think of their names!

My 7 year old son bought this with his birthday money, and it has been a great hit. The ease with which he can build, and experiment with, simple circuits - using the snap fastener links - is superb. Some of the activities are still a bit advanced for him, but I am confident that the durability of the set will ensure it is still in play when he is ready for the next stages.
