I cannot stand this book - my daughter loves it and it drives me nuts from the second she picks it up and it declares "it's nursery rhyme time". The woman's voice has an annoying accent and for some reason only sings half the song, the music and noises aren't as annoying but you have no way of controlling which you get. Fortunately my in-laws who bought it for her didn't supply extra batteries so when they run out we don't replace them for as long as possible - in fact we only replaced them the last time because we forgot how irritating it was! (it's OK for the in-laws they live 500 miles away!)

Your child will no doubt love it - if you are going to get it buy yourself some earplugs!

VTech WALL-E Learning Laptop

This is well-made and looks exactly like Wall-E. Unfortunately, it is disappointing in that (a) it has a female American voice, not Wall-E's voice (b) The number of games within each activity are extremely limited and do not make full use of the range of numbers and letters. For example, the spelling game - where a child is asked to find the first letter of a word - contains only about 7 words, whereas you would expect it to have at least 26. (c) the display is very small, basic and monotone.
(d) One of the activities does not work.
My daughter loves computers and loves the character Wall-E but has not had much fun with this.

Its only a little bigger than a golf ball and has no real catch for our daughter. At £6 ish it is not a lot of money but that money can buy far more elsewhere. Not a great toy.

Downfall

We got this as a standby for a holiday in case it was wet. We ended up playing it quite a bit. Ok, it's a little bit flimsy but it's not that bad and nothing has broken off.

Some of the parts are a bit difficult to assemble when you put it together but no real problem.

As a game it is quite good fun and it's often impossible to tell who will win until the last few moves. The children enjoyed it - which is the acid test.

Cheap fun!

This is great as long as it doesn't come into contact with water. Much like a Mogwai (Gremlins), when in contact with water the fun stops and ink just covers everything. We have a ruined kitchen table as a result and I do accept that there is a warning on the packaging stating that ink may run if it comes into contact with water but anyone with children will know that accidents can (and more often than not, do) happen. Unfortunately the ink isn't wipe off either, when in contact with wood it acts like stain and we have a beautiful pattern on our kitchen table. Great idea just a shame about the flaws but if you're sure you're able to keep children under constant supervision when playing with it then great, just be aware!

John Adams Electro Mag

This is a good educational toy with easy to follow instructions for setting up circuits. The connections are robust as they are based on magnets - easy for a child to construct and pull apart. My only quibble is the scientific explanations which are too difficult for a 7-8 year old. It needs a simple description/glossary for each component with uses within a circuit followed by the more complicated description. Relies therefore on parental help - pretty non-existent in my household!

One engineer's symbol (light) is inconsistent.

Game with great educational value.You don't need to have an MA in Fine Arts from Oxford to excel in this game. All you need is some creativity, and reorientation of your brain cells from the word to image form.A picture conveys a thousand words;Pictionary has more than one thousands ways to convey the same word; Enough said; ditto !
