Top Trumps - British Army

We started collecting some Top Trumps for our 7 year old son who although was good at reading was a reluctant reader. This particular edition is the one that is played the most as it is full of fascinating info on the frontline regiments. Our 7 year old avidly plays this with his 4 year old brother so we have the additional benefit of a 4 year old reading words beyond his age group and learning the order of very large numbers too. As a family we like to play these Trumps. I would say to any parent that they should consider buying toys like these to encourage reading and comparison of facts and figures.
To the Top Trumps people - could we have a continuation of the military(Army) theme please?

Taboo

Taboo is basically talking Pictionary. You split into teams, and in each round one member of the team has to describe as many words as possible to his team mates within the time period. But there are some words that are taboo - that you can't say, and these are of course the words that you really want to say. A member of the opposition checks over your shoulder to make sure you don't slip up.

What this leads to is a fast-moving and at times hilarious game for all the family. It is a game in which age and other things that make a real difference in some more traditional games (like Trivial Pursuit) count for nothing, as what really matters is quick thinking, using words to get round the houses to things.

Doctor Who Uno

This one was an immediate hit with my son who is just eight. The downside is I am now playing games of Uno every night before going to bed, as his treat. The upside is tactically he is getting very good and has started beating me regularly. It does require even the grown up brain to be in gear, but games last only a few minutes - even a long fought out vicious game is only about fifteen minutes. And you can play it sitting up in bed.

It's been many years since I played Uno, but I have fond memories of always enjoying it as a child. When the brightly coloured box came, my children were immediately interested in what was inside, and they weren't disappointed. Whilst the actual physical spinner itself is slightly flimsy and probably won't stand up to years of use, my children enjoyed the game greatly. There's little educational value, but it is and always has been a good game. What was particularly good for the children was how it's possible to get so close to winning, only to have the chance taken away from you - always the hallmark of a game that will stand the test of time.
