There are a few very odd choices for a compilation which purports to contain "the very best" of doo wop (the Penguins' Ookey Ook rather than Earth Angel, for example, and a Marvin Gaye recording which pays homage to that renowned street corner singer Nat Cole). Nevertheless you get more bona fide classic doo wop songs here in excellent sound than anyhwere else short of the expensive Doo Wop Box series.

A truly "very best" would also include the Flamingos' Golden Teardrops and the Dells' Oh What a Night, for my money, but the compiler hits the bullseye more often than not and this is certainly as comprehensive an introduction to the classic era of doo wop for the novice as you will find. There was no such thing as Rockabilly until 1958 when it was defined by Tin Pan Alley for a Guy Mitchell song.
None of these country artists would ever have imagined that the records they made would become collectors items in the future and many never thought of themselves as other than country singers.
My friend Ginny Wright who was a star in the early 50s never thought of her self as doing rockabilly even though her singing partner Tom Tall is known for a few records defined as such.
