I have no idea how well the movie "The Commitments" actually did in the UK, but I saw it when it opened here in Denmark twelve or thirteen years ago, and the soundtrack was a huge hit, not least with people of my generation who usually didn't listen to 60s soul music (I was about 18 at the time).
This is a wonderful colletion of gritty soul and R&B with a bluesy edge, the arrangements, which include trumpet and two saxophones, are muscular but never overblown. Teenaged Joe Cocker-soundalike Andrew Strong is terrific on powerful soul stompers like "Mustang Sally", "In The Midnight Hour", and "Take Me To The River", and Angeline Ball and the predominantly female backing group share the lead vocals on equally great renditions of "Chain ... Andy Williams has been singing since the 50's when everyone was used to singing alongside a full orchestra, like other well known singers of that time, (Matt Monroe, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra etc).
Andy is known for his ballads he sung; although he did some slightly faster songs as well He has a lovely melodic voice which had a lovely tone, he has a distinctive voice which when any of his music is played anywhere a fan of his can tell instantly. :-)
I have many off Andy Williams albums on vinyl and cassette. Some of albums I haven't heard for a couple of years as I haven't been able to get them on CD which is a great shame.
What attracted to me to this album was all my favourites were on it plus a couple that I ... Read More:

I am a nine year old boy and my teacher got our class to read Just So Stories.
I think it was okay and can be hard to understand. The illustrations were different to other stories. It was funny at some parts and I enjoyed it.
But at some parts there was some dificult to understand the language.
I recommend this book to people who were around at the time it was written.

This is the perfect soundtrack for the movie, though not necessarily a great soundtrack, if that makes sense!! A lot of thought went into the selection of tracks, with obvious numbers such as 'don't let the sun go down on me' and 'people are strange', and great tracks such as 'cry little sister'. The album has a nice, gothic feel to it. That said, take it away from its context to the movie, I'm not sure its something a casual listener would get into.
Personally, I like the film, so I like the soundtrack. Watch the film first, then you can decide.....

Hairspray the musical is based on the excellent original film, but the music is even better. The soundtrack is a joy to listem to from start to finish. The first song on the soundtrack is "Good Morning Baltimore" a very upbeat number that leaves you wanting more, as the CD goes on it just gets better and better ending on a high with "You can't stop the beat". My favourite song is "I can hear the Bells" where Tracy declares her undying love for Link.
The CD has all sorts on it, sad, happy, funny songs but they all have the 1960's feel to it, making you wish you were part of that era.

An excellent soundtrack for an excellent series. Being four years older than Simon in 1997, this soundtrack has had me bopping around for days. Not only are there old classics, and also classics dressed up (cue Minogue & Minogue, and Sophie Ellis-Bextor), but some fantastic new music from Dan Gillespie. This includes the fabulous theme tune, and some spectacular orchestrations throughout. My only gripe is that the Annie medley from the Joseph episode isn't included. That said, it is a superb soundtrack!!

Like the last reviewer, and many, many others, The Blues Brothers was a film I first watched when I was about 10 and it introduced me to a whole new world of music.
This soundtrack was the first record I ever owned and it is where I first heard a lot of artists that I may otherwise never of heard of, since I had only really listened to pop and ska before.
This is a great collection and younger people especially will find it it very educational. If you enjoy the soundtrack it would also be a good idea to look up some of the other artists featured in the film but not on the soundtrack, like Sam and Dave and John Lee Hooker.
A fun film and a fun soundtrack, try the other Blues Brothers recordings too, you won't regret it!

Most of the classical songs are great sung very well by talented singers, but don't expect the original artists from the stage shows as they're not on there. Some of the more modern songs weren't so great and We Will Rock You was played like a fanfare for HRH the Queen, that was a real let down, no hand clapping or headbanging, there are more electric guitars in Phantom!!!
If like orchestras this is for you, if you want songs from original cast members don't bother.

If you actually like paying for what are little more than sound effects masquerading as tracks, then get this soundtrack. For example: Banister Fight - RZA; Flip Sting; Sword Swings - Luis Bacalov;Axe Throws - Bernard Herrmann.
For those wanting to get a true Kill Bill soundtrack, with all the movie music included, you will be disappointed to hear that the following tracks are ABSENT from this soundtrack or are totally unrecogniseable from the movie version:
'Nobody But Me - The Human Beinz' - absent;
'Seven Notes In Black - Vince Tempera' (this is the music playing as Kiddo is about to slash Buck, but is heavily rapped over by RZA or whoever he is);
'Long Day Of Vengeance - Armando Travajoli' - absent;
'Death Rides A Horse ... Read More:
