This album regularly appears in lists of top reggae albums of all time, indicating that compilers of such lists probably don't own enough reggae records. Undoubtedly, the main reason for its acclaim lies with its opener "Police and Thieves", which is indeed a seminal roots masterpiece but it's fair to say that had it not been popularised by the Clash, this album would still be languishing in obscurity. Perry's production is interesting, but it certainly doesn't reach the majestic heights he achieves on the Congos' Heart of the Congos, and many of the songs here are distinctly unspectacular. Not a bad record, but overrated. For the real classics of 70s roots reggae, try the Mighty Diamonds' "Right Time", Burning Spear's "Marcus Garvey" or the ... Read More:

I remember the first time I met someone else who also knew this album. That was about 20 years ago in France, and the bloke was a Punk bloke with the most extreme look and a pronounced taste for very hardcore music. For some reason he was at my place for a party and at some point I played this album. That certainly got his attention as he already knew and loved this album and we struck a lasting immediate friendship there and then.
I think this is the moct important thing about this album. It transcends the closed up Dub world to a larger experimental world of open minded people. The production is impeccable, and it certainly will twist your mind when you have smoked a few too many spliffs, but even now that I have not been smoking ... Read More:

before they settled into a blander niche, ub40 were a mighty british reggae band with the avowed intention of bringing dub into the charts and the mainstream. how they succeeded! tyler, king, food for thought and burden of shame were heartfelt political statements of their time set to infectious grooves, weird echoey dubs and ali`s unique vocals. the standout track has to be "madam medusa" which is the finest anti-thatcher record ever(they encored with it at glastonbury 1983 a few days after the tories election victory, introducing it as more relevant than ever), almost 13 minutes long with one of the longest and most atmospheric dubs ever committed to record- simply outstanding and worth the price of the cd on it`s own. signing off is simply one ... `The Future us Unwritten' is Julian Temple's documentary film about the late great Joe strummer and is of `The Filth and the Fury' rather than `The Great Rock'N'Roll Swindle' template. The Soundtrack album also serves to tell the story of Joe mixing his own songs with the songs that inspired him and linking it all together with sound bites of Joe from various interviews and the links he made as a DJ for the BBC World Service with his occasional show `London Calling'.
Joe's own cannon is well represented here with The 101ers (Joe's first recording band) `Keys to your Heart' and early Clash with previously un-released demo versions of `White Riot' and `I'm So Bored with the USA'. The Clash's reggae influence is showcased with the single ... Read More:

Man, this is a bad album. Unless you like reggae or ska of course, in which case it's fine. But if you're looking to buy this as a back catalogue of Gwen Stefani, then please don't, it really isn't very listenable.

With 1980's adventurous More Specials the Coventry band overcame the 'difficult second album syndrome', a fate which has befallen many an artist over the years. They did this by broadening their musical palette; where their classic debut (effectively) embraces the ska and reggae of Prince Buster, The Skatalites and Toots and The Maytals, this album sees them venturing into a wider variety of genres, including northern soul (`Sock It To `Em J.B.'), spaghetti westerns soundtracks (`Stereotypes') and easy listening (`Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think)'). That is not to say they jettisoned all that made The Specials so exciting and different: lead singer Terry Hall still delivers his vocals with a flat, deadpan delivery and the lyrics and subject matter remain ...
