I'm not a big punk fan but this album gets played over and over again. It's fast, exciting, tuneful punk which easily gets you hooked.

At the risk of contradicting myself, there's some really simple punk themes - loud fast guitars and simple vocal techniques. The lyrics are really literate and insightful, and there's a lot of skill in the playing.

Loads of short tracks, an obvious single (Radio Havana) and some tracks you want to play again and again. 'Black Derby Jacket' is the sort of track anyone would be proud of and demands to be listened to over and over again.

I think you've just discovered the definitive punk album.

I'm a big UB40 fan and I can easily say this album represents the best of their studio work. The band has been haunted by the commercial success of their cover hits but this album clearly demonstrates that they can write and arrange great original work. "Things ain't like they used to be" is one of the best UB40 singles never released. Other standouts include "Promises and Lies", C'est Levie", "Higher Ground" and the two last tracks. Overall, one of the 90's most underrated classics. The Elvis remake of 'Cant Help Falling In Love' is highly recommended.

Just to give you an idea of the diversity of the material on offer here, I myself am a fan of death metal. Thing is, you just cant deny the passion and fun Less Than Jake have when performing their music.It's impossible not to smile, reach for a beverage and call up your friends to plan a party when you hear songs like "Plastic Cup Politics", "Surrender" "The Science of Selling Yourself Short" ect.
And even though didnt need to prove their worth as musicians, they do it anyway by peppering the album with a wonderful "ballad" in the form of "The Brightest Bulb Has Burned Out!.
Bands like Less Than Jake are few and far between. In this day and age in a post-grunge musical landscape, pessimistic and negative music seem to have become the norm. But even the ... Read More:

When I first saw matisyahu performing youth and king without a crown via the web I was blown away by his presence and songcraft, listening 2 this album was one of the biggest anti-climaxes 4 me ever and I have a feeling it is due 2 label pressure 2 release a substandard work. In truth there are a handful of killer tracks but the rest is messy utopian drivel and I hate to say so because i know this act are the real deal and I have a suspicion there next release will prove me right. gr8 singles, dire album
