A stunning new album!! I got into The Black Seeds following the discovery of Fat Freddys Drop and this is their best work IMHO.
Great tunes and all that I love in reggae and more. They sound tight and although a couple of the tracks sound a little laboured I think this is more the production than a lack of fluidity. There is even a hint of Radiohead in the vocals from time to time, but despite that (I hate Radiohead) the vocals soar.
Give this a go if you have not listened to them before and if you have, you'll love it!

This album is truly rammed with just about all the great cuts Mr.Issacs has cut during the years stated. His prolific volume of work for all these years means a few magic tracks may have been overlooked but this will be purely because of lack of space on two CDs.Trojan have done a great job on this set and whoever put it together must be a true fan.Even the Sly nd Robbie (Island tracks are included which brings his biggest hit-Night Nurse along with some others from the album. This realy does showcase the artist's vocal diversity as he has had to adapt to the onset of modern dance hall.
Nobody croon a roots tune quite like Gregory! This is an anthology you must own if you love reggae music.Forget the rest and buy the best!Superb reggae which ... Read More:

Culture could have made a greatest Hits with at least 20 of their best songs. The collection of songs they have made is formidable. They have hits as far back as the 70's. This album should be much better! I am very disapointed. I have made a much better collection than this one!

While it may shock the duller purists to realise that the Wailers themselves preferred to released the heavily overdubbed "British" mix of "Concrete Jungle" as a single on Tugg Gong in 1972, the fact remains that the rawer and more minimal mixes from Dynamic and Harry J are closer to the "classic" Wailers sound from the Wail'n'Soul'm and Lee Perry years than the Island remixes. As a historical document, some of the tracks are fascinating, as works in progress develop. Musically, being a unified group with a fixed bassist and drummer and having £4000 to spend in the studio permitted a degree of experimentation, and in this case it paid off handsomely.
If you've read this far, you'll know what songs are on the album, so I needn't say more

Great record from the 70s - highlights being the protest songs for George Lindo and Darcus Howe. The anger is always tempered by the poetry, the intelligence and the infectious dance beats. Sounds as good now as it did then.

The Rocksteady era was short, but in that time some gems where made. Conquering Ruler - Morgan, Derrick, Riding On A High & Windy Day - Paragons, Dreader Than Dread - Honey Boy Martin, Upsetter - Lee Perry. This defiantly is an album to get your lover in the mood, slower than Ska, more filled in then Dub, should put a smile on anyone's face after they have bought it and played it for the first time

Quite a departure from the recent batch of re-issue material that Greensleeves have released. The UK based Lovers Rock is not a sub-genre of reggae that a lot people associate with the label, but they would be wrong, because for time in the late 70's / early 80's, Greensleeves had an offshoot label dedicated to Lovers Rock, called Cool Rockers where some of the material for this compilation is culled from.
All the songs on this compilation were massive hits of the time. At the time Lovers Rock was seen as an exclusively British thing, but over the years the music has become very popular in Japan and also in the US, where Lovers Rock music - which has always consisted of a lot of cover versions of big US soul hits - strikes more than chord.

What I hate the most is people's attitude's towards UB40. People who think they aren't a "proper" reggae band just because they aren't Jamaican! Well, any listens to this shows they can play it proficiently and give it their own identity, not least due to the distinctive harmonies of Ali and Robin Campbell. From the anti-Thatcher early stuff to the more commercial but melodic pop-reggae they play now, they never get boring or samey, although the cover of "I Got You Babe" is the only damp squib.
