Cohen made three classic albums with John Lissaeur at the helm: 1974's New Skin For The Old Ceremony, 1979's Recent Songs, but at the apex of these achievements stands 1984's Various Positions, in that it paved the way for a new audience to discover Leonard Cohen afresh. This wasn't done by just adding the odd synthesised drone here and there, for there is the same continuity of themes and musical genres threaded consistently through the works (compare New Skin's 'Why Don't You Try?' or 'I Tried To Leave You' alongside Recent Songs' 'Came So Far For Beauty' or 'The Smokey Life', i.e., and you'll find they sit naturally next to tracks like 'Hallelujah' or 'Coming Back To You', whereas 'Night Comes On' and 'If It Be Your Will' would not have sounded ... i heard some of the stuff off HTID in the sun and was impressed so i saw this and thought why not i got it put it in the hifi cranked up the volume and was blown away quality song after quality song a true bargain

This is a good CD with some catchy songs on it, but they can get a bit boring after a while.

Great hooks, real passion, no holding back - sounds good so far! I'd never heard of the Gaslight Anthem until the other night, when I stumbled across them whilst band surfing. I was immediately grabbed by the title track, "The 59 SOund", which absolutely screams along. It's not alone; there aren't too many weak moments, and there is a huge amount of promise and power on display here.

I suspect this is not their "great" album: they sound to me like they are still refining the sound, gaining confidence, as sometimes perhaps they come across as - strange as it sounds - almost over-enthusiastic, brimming over with too much energy and too many ideas.

I'm already looking forward to their next effort, and most of all to seeing them live.

Parachutes is still my favourit album from Coldplay. This album contributed to coldplays success with great songs Shivers, Yellow, High Speed, Everythings not lost. What can I say one of the best English bands ever.

I have this CD on constant repeat! The music is so varied but holds your attention every step of the way. Bocelli's voice is one you just have to fall in love with. His "Romanza" is 1 of my favourites but "Vivo Per Lei" has me hooked also. GET THIS CD!!!!!!

In a time when a lot of new music seems to be completely devoid of soul, melodies or meaning this album comes along, kicks you in the head and makes you remember just how beautiful and life-affirming music can be.

It's a concept album about the life of the carmaker John DeLorean (he of the famous Back to the Future car), but quite frankly the subject doesn't matter at all when the music is this good, and I triple-guarantee this album will put a smile on your face and add an extra step to your walk.

The opening track reminds me of early 80s bombast so much and if I could fill my living room with dry ice and lasers to accompany it I would at the drop of a hat. There's also a slight Deus Ex theme feel to it too which appeals greatly. Boxers should enter their ... Read More:

I had never heard of these but my boyfriend put this onto my ipod. I just could not stop laughing. "Can someone please remove these cutleries from my knees?" I laughed out loud on the tube.

This album is great and definately worth the wait with the most outstanding songs being: Hippy's Son, Plastic Hearts, Tired of England, Faultlines and Best Face.... So half the album really, which proves just how great this album is. Infact the other songs i feel are not very far behind and i am sure they will grow on me.
This album shows the Dirty Pretty Things find a slightly calmer sound while still keeping that angry, exciting energy.
So all in this is a very successful second album and i think they have not fallen into the trap of producing poor quality second albums. This album shows the Dirty Pretty things find their style.
