When the lights came up in the cinema where we saw Wim Wenders' movie of the same name, we saw grown adults weeping. This is more than a band, it is a musical phenomenon. Such a synergy is rare in this day and age, and the vibe on this album is just fantastic.
Buy it and weep, because you have missed your chance to ever see or hear Ruben Gonzales, Compay Segundo or Ibrahim Ferrer playing live with the band again, but the remaining members still tour and the band is organic, progressing through the years with younger, equally talented musicians, so if you see a gig advertised and can get to it, don't miss it! This album has changed many lives...

This is among the best CDs I have ever bought! I've been listening to it for 2 months straight, and I'm still not sick of it! Listening to John's voice as he sings these songs makes me laugh, makes me cry, and occasionally makes me cry out his name in pleasure. There's a great selection of songs, and they are just sung so beautifully! Love it!

This is an excellent update of the previously released "My Way: The Best pf Frank Sinatra": the record company have added a whole new CD! The single album was already terrific value for money, containing as it did Frank's best loved and most well known songs but the addition of the extra CD has made this an indispensable album for anyone wanting to add some Frank Sinatra to their CD collection - it just beats all the other competition clean out of sight!

Jacques Brel remains an integral and hugely influential singer/songwriter in the scheme of twentieth-century music; with his gloomy and orchestral tales of whores, sailors, tramps and harlots influencing everyone from Scott Walker, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Shane MacGowan and Nick Cave, to bands like Jack, the Divine Comedy and Pulp. Like those acts, Brel's music is literate and theatrical, unfolding in a bleak world populated by lost love, loneliness, angst, melancholy and despair, but with the darkness softened by witty arrangements, satirical motifs and moments of dark comedy. The atmosphere of the songs is rich and evocative throughout... so, like the work of his contemporary Serge Gainsbourg; the songs practically reek of cheap booze and cigarette ... Read More:
While maybe not the `Ultimate' Christmas Album from Classic FM - they have for many years released a new festive selection and I'm sure this won't be the last - this is certainly one of the most innovative thanks to its combination of traditional classical hymns and a selection of familiar festive music arranged jazz style, one disc being dedicated to each style of music.
The `jazzing up' of Christmas hits is nothing new to the pop music world, and certainly forms part of the recording repertoire of most jazz musicians, but it's rarer to find a combination of the two on one album release of greatest hits, and in this case some truly great, all American, artists. Names like Louis Armstrong, Eartha Kitt, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina ... Read More:

Cartography By any definition, this is extraordinary music. Arve Henriksen has singlehandedly created a whole new sound and texture for the trumpet that no-one else even comes close to. This is emotional, compelling, contemplative music of a very special kind being created and played by a master - if he's this good now, it's scary how good he could be when he gets to be Jan Garbarek's age. The comparison with Garbarek is deliberate, in that Garbarek created a new tone and style for the tenor sax the way Henriksen is doing for the trumpet. There's elements of traditional folksong, hints of 'classical music', and dissenters will probably call it 'new age', but this is a truly seminal record. If you're still not sure, check out the final track 'Sorrow and it's opposite', ... Read More:

If you like the voices of Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald at their melancholy best then you'll like this CD.
Madeleine Peyroux has the reputation for being an offbeat and thoughtful character. Maybe because she takes her art so seriously. Strange fruit that is essentially beautiful.

I agree with all the other reviews on the album , well nearly all . As my title says , why for Gods sake did H.Hancock and co put this has been in on what is a good listening album - but Leonard "let me open a vein to" Cohen on a Jazz album !!???? He can't sing - never could , never will , and the only reason that I can think of why he's on this album is because he's from Canada . The track is not "interesting" it's bloody awful and the producers should hang thier heads in shame .
