Progressive metal is an artform with roots back to bands and artists like Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Mahavishnu Orchestra. Odd meters, musicianship of the highest order. But also with an, in my eyes, unhealthy leaning towards the dark, the perverted and the downright satanic. With the trademark growls producing an uncanny effect for the uninitiated listener.

Cynic, whose '93 debut was hailed as a landmark album for it's technical brilliance and its blend of jazz, metal, progressive and more quiet, new age like passages, differs from most bands in the genre. Their debut was stunning - there's no denying it. Mixing power, fury and at times comic instrumentation and vocals, it was always going to be a hard album to beat. But System have done it. Toxicity is an amazing album.

For those that dismiss Toxicity as 'too commercial' or 'too mainstream'. To make accessible music that still has the power and strength that nearly all of the tracks on this CD have takes a great deal of skill. How to make music sound not only familiar but also brand apsnking new and still like it has something incredibly important to say is the sign of master songwriters. And Toxicity has all of that in bucketloads.

There comes a time in the career of every great group when less is decidedly more and they are better off resting on their laurels and not risking their reputations. Alas, this was advice Queen chose not to heed... which suggests to me that the sad demise of Freddie Mercury may have saved them from further decline. Yes, sacrilege I know but maybe a touch of truth? You decide...

It's not that this collection is abysmal. Worse than that, it's just ordinary, the sort of compilation you damn with faint praise. In the hands of an ordinary combo it would probably be quite acceptable MoR pop/rock, but from Queen it's an inevitable decline from the dizzy heights their finest music. I bought this with enough of an open mind to not expect it to be GnR Mark 2(000?). Unfortunately I was correct; this is a poor album. As happens on Amazon, I feel I must take issue with so many five star reviews of frankly mediocre and dull offerings. Many customers like me used to buy on the stength of these reviews. If there is only one two star review out of a hundred; read it and believe it. Five stars should be reserved for timeless masterpieces.
The production quality is poor, the vocals are very weak and most crucially, the songs are dull and completely unmemorable. It seems that the much maligned Axl Rose may have been the creative influence in GnR by a substantial margin. Was Slash overrated from his time in GnR? It seems so from this album, ... Read More:

I only discovered this band about a year ago and this album is without doubt my favourite of the moment (and I've been playing it for a year now!). Every song is excellent. Rock music you can sing along to!

If you have a casual fondness for The Clash then maybe best not to bother with this.

However, if like me you think The Clash are the greatest band of all time then you simply must own this - ignore the bad reviews you will see!

Sure, there are a few songs on here that you will listen to once or twice and probably never again, but there is an albums worth of around 20 excellent songs on here that any serious Clash fan must own.

If you are just getting into The Clash however, you would be better buying the debut album, give em enough rope and London Calling first - as this could scare you off!
