Should i ever be asked to name the album i consider to be the most influential in the history of music( given that i have,nt heard every album in the history of music) i would plump for Massive Attacks 1991 debut album Blue Lines. Trip hop years before the term became synonymous with ....well anything , it triggered a shift in dance and electronic music to what the music critic Simon Reynolds called "a more meditational sound " running ( or maybe loping ) at lower tempo,s .
The band merged black music influences like hip -hop , reggae and soul but allied them to the more ambitious prog aspects of bands like Pink Floyd and King Crimson( without the middle class patina) and the savvy dub tones of Public Image. The music is infused with ... Read More:

Terrific energy, honesty, depth and meaning.
Will not appeal to those who expect more of the same (with respect to the signature track) or who are threatened by musical freedom of expression, which is evident here in many eclectic forms.

This is the best album I've heard in ages! Being a collection spanning Jimy Somemrville's career, it is a real mixture of old favourites and some less well known tracks. To be played loudly at all times and singing along is a must.

Of course, I first heard Natty doing an acoustic of "Bedroom Eyes" which made me sit up and listen.
There's been far too much self-referential "talky" music recently, where the singer is trying to suggest that they are rather clever and knowing, and just end up looking arrogant.
While some might class "Man Like I" as being in a similar vein, Natty's lyrics are intelligently written and thought provoking. More than that, he's got a voice that you can listen to, rather than terrible mockney accents that have pervaded the music scene this summer.
Buy it, listen to the chilled out sound, then listen again and think about what he's saying.

A record that managed to do what no other "urban" garage album had managed before; combine deep bass-driven hooks, intelligent lyrics and sublime melodies. "From Mile End to Ealing ...Brixton to Bounds Green" there wasn't a person I knew living in London 6 years ago whose head wasn't turned by this album. Stories of sitting in cafes debating whether to call the girl you'd met the night before, doing the same drugs you'd done 10 years ago, bemoaning the lack of ambition in the UK music scene, this was a record that spoke to us, shared our experiences and spat them out in a more eloquent way than we thought possible. Turn the Page is the best opening track off a debut album since the Doors' Break on Through, a dark yet joyful, mesmerising statement of intent; "I'm 45th generation Roman", ... Read More:

I'm not so sure S-Club7 should be remembered, they were embarrassingly bad! And not even in a cute way, like The Vengaboys or Steps... They were just a bunch of chavs trying to have 5 mins of fame, this CD is definately one for the dustbin!

It just wouldn't be a Garbage release if it didn't come with a delay. Almost 3 years after a Best Of was announced, it finally saw the light of day earlier this year. Many fans speculated that the delay was the result of Warner putting their work in to make a comprehensive set for the fans - rumours of complete b-sides and music video collections, as well as a live CD/DVD box set began to surface. The end result can't help but leave any long-term Garbage fan under-whelmed and confused about the 3 year gap.
The bonus disc of remixes is, bar a few exceptions, a waste of a perfectly good blank CD that would have been better suited to home a selection of their 40-odd b-sides. There are occasionally some genuinely cool re-workings - namely U.N.K.L.E.'s 'The World Is Not Enough', Massive Attack's ... Read More:

Like Memoryhouse, Max Richter's sadly deleted first CD, this album is suffused with a forlorn melancholia. The quotes from Franz Kafka (beautifully read by Tilda Swinton), compound the feeling that this is a nostalgic homage to the lost world of East European cultures that were shattered by Stalinist purges and Nazi pogroms. The standout track, 'The Shadow Journal', is impossibly beautiful, distilling the album's sense of loss into an achingly sad refrain for violin and, suprisingly, a jay!
Small but perfectly formed.
