I find it sad that so few people know Beth's music so I tell people about this and always have it in the car. Her voice matches her melodies, and the production is usually understated which makes it all the more pleasant. If you don't recognise any songs here, do give it a chance because you'll be glad you did!

This is sort of mental peace offering to myself. I do dislike Ryan Adams new album Cardinology with a vengeance but that must not distract from what a brilliant catalogue of work he has built up over time. Indeed when Adams released "Heartbreaker" I thought this is it. What I mean is that the are times in rock musice when great albums are released which define the direction of music. They are instant classics and last the test of time. Dylan's great trilogy Bringing it back Home, Highway 61 and Blonde on Blonde remains unsurpassed. More than that there is something timeless and enduring about them a factor which so few artists capture. Think of Joni Mitchell's "Blue", Neil Young's "On the Beach" and "Tonight's the Night", Beach Boys "Pet Sounds". Adams first ... Read More:

I have practically no interest in Country music with the notable exception of Neil Young's Harvest Moon (which I also consider a masterpiece.) But this magificent effort from the Chicks is one of those albums that totally transcends genres. I consider it the equal of such classics as Metallica's "...And Justice For All", The Mediaeval Baebes' "The Rose", Tori Amos' "Little Earthquakes", A-ha's "Hunting High and Low", Bon Jovi's "7800oF", Dire Straits' "Alchemy Live", Within Temptation's "Mother Earth", The Divine Madness' "Secrets", Def Leppard's "Pyromania", Whitesnake's "1987", Portishead's "Portishead", David Krakauer's "Bubbemeises: Lies my gramma told me", Sabbat's "Dreamweaver" etc etc etc. I could go on.

It is time for the nature of music reviews - at least for popular music - to change. There's no need any longer to read a review to help you decide if you want to buy an album. All of these tracks can be heard on various places online - either in part or in full, often in different arrangements, sometimes in video - and the lyrics too are freely available. So you can listen, and read, before you decide whether to buy. The traditional reviewer role of helping you decide whether or not this music will be for you, is redundant. It's time for 'reviewers' of popular music to become critics and commentators, to promote discussion rather than offer guidance. With that in mind, here's Johnny...

The group recorded three albums during their three years together, but one (Stampede) was never officially released. A fourth album (Last time around) was assembled from leftover tracks after the group disbanded. Their second original album (Again) is easily the best of the three officially released and several of its tracks are included here. Within a general acoustic rock style, there is plenty of diversity including folk, pop and country influences and this eclectic mix illustrates the clash of styles within the group.
