So it's fair to say that without Neil Young's "dirty" guitar sound, perhaps grunge may not have been what we know today. From Pearl Jam working extensively with the man to Kurt Cobain quoting him in his suicide note, Neil Young was a driving influence. So in 1990, after the somewhat low key release of Nirvana's "Bleach," it begins to look like a new breed of musician may be coming out of Seattle, perhaps the torch is going to be passed on, and what Young started will be taken to its logical conclusion? Then Neil Young and Crazy Horse strike out with an album that proves that they not only influenced this scene, they can define it too. An album from a band in its third decade that just screams to be recognised as a contemporary of the likes of ... Read More:

In all honesty these have to be some of the most moving pieces I have ever listened to.As described in the title Charlie is among family and friends and the entire album resonates with that atmosphere. You can easily tell that everyone feels very much "at home" and there is an obvious lack of competing for first place. Bruce Hornsby on piano and Pat Metheny's measured acoustic guitar playing are absorbing. The Sally Gardens track almost reduced me to tears.Simply beautiful. I'm still recovering. Thanks Charlie.

This is a brilliant selection of songs by Johnny Cash and for a man in the twilight of his years there is just so much energy and sheer joy of music making coming through on this album. Just play 'Country Boy' to see what I mean and to confirm what a great idea it was to get Tom Petty et al to back the great man, who's voice still sounds so strong.
Don Gibsons 'Sea of Heartbreak' was a favourite of mine when I was at school and its so good to hear it again. The Carter families 'The kneeling drunkards plea' drives along at a great pace and 'Meet me in heaven' is just so moving to those of us who have loved Johnny and June over the years and can imagine them walking those streets of gold. What a shame their last song has been sung.

I love this album soooo much! Jenny Lewis's voice is truly amazing, she could sing anything, including addresses from the phone book, and it would sound fantastic. Add to the mix the Watson Twins voices and Im in heaven!
The songs themselves are sheer class, and the lyrics are witty, dry and very clever...

This star rating thing is funny old business, as I write Evil Urges has an overall rating of 3.5 stars, on the strength of some very negative reviews from MMJ fans comparing Evil Urges unfavorably with their previous output. I agree the album isn't as good as either Z or It Still Moves but in the grand scheme of things it ain't no two star album, nor is it naive or unintelligent. The title track, think Curtis Mayfield via Lambchop with a bit of Prog-Rock thrown-in for good measure, is worth the price of the admission alone.

This is an extremely well thought out 2-CD collection featuring guitarist Les Paul. The first CD is centred around the mid-forties, when he provided accompaniment, either singly or in a small group, to a number of the vocalists recording for Decca. Amongst them were Bing Crosby, who sings six numbers in a particularly languorous style, plus four from the Philco Radio Hour. Although not reflected in the track listing, "Hey Lolly Lolly Lo" and "I Ain't Gonna Be Treated This Way" were recorded on 21st March 1947, and the second voice that can be heard is that of Burl Ives. They're followed by two each from Helen Forrest, the Delta Rhythm Boys, the Andrews Sisters, and Dick Haymes. Highlight of the set for me is Kay Starr, who contributes ten tracks accompanied by a ... If you are a fan of John Mellencamp then Chris Knight is definately for you. Offering the same southern alt rock and country vibes in his music, lyrics and vocals as Mellencamp does, he is no less a light for it and should share equal billing in your music collection. Recommended.
