The Byrds along with The Velvet Underground the most underrated band of the 60s. The Byrds probably the founding fathers of Psychedelia, mixing folk,country and psychedlic rock makes them one of the most influential bands of all time.
Starting With Mr Tambourine Man one of the finest covers of all time, with a fantastic guitar riff, Turn,Turn,Turn and brilliant riff as well and one of my favourite Byrd Songs, and ofcourse the unmistakable Eight Miles High one of the finest Psychedelic songs of all time, Featuring Dave Crosby and Roger McGuinn recognisable 12 string guitar maes the Byrds in my view just as important and influential as The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and the Kinks, this is just a brilliant Compilation.

This CD is fantastic - a return to form for the First Lady of Country music. From the opening track, the lyrics and music flow easily, and are all likeable, 'catchy' and heartfelt.

Ofcourse they are stand out tracks - the first single, 'Better Get To Living' but also the wonderfully up-lifting 'Jesus & Gravity' and the great 'Shinola' (a track where Dolly gets mad and even!). Plus an amazingly original cover version of 'She Drives Me Crazy', where Dolly add's her own touch of 'crazy'!

Most of the tracks tell a story and so many, it seems, come - possibly - from Dolly's own life experience's, especially the title-track 'Backwoods Barbie'. And top marks have to be given for the art-work of the album - Dolly looks ... Read More:

Steve Earle music is best described as country-rock. The skull and cross bones that form the cover of Copperhead Road album warn of what is to come, a heavy mix of potent music shot through with the reflections of an wild young man who is older than his years. Inserts show a relaxed Earle, fag in mouth, black shades and dressed in denim.

A strong start with 'Copperhead Road' on which you can apparently 'smell the whisky burnin'; 'The Devil's Right Hand' refers to a pistol and though the song has a strange lyrical resonace it isn't until 'Johnny Come Lately' (on which the Pogues play) when the album begins to rock..

The Hollies are often overlooked in favour of The Beatles and The Kinks - true they didn't write all their own material and they followed trends rather than set them - but the bands melodic brand of harmony driven, guitar power-pop definately deserves reinvestigation. Lead by Allan Clarke and Graham Nash, The Hollies scored hit after hit through the mid to late 60's and even enjoyed belated chart action with the gorgeous 'Air That I Breath' in 1973. That their influence can be heard decades later with the likes of Teenage Fanclub, Dodgy and latterly The Feeling, is testiment to the quality of the singles compiled on this collection. Love On The Inside

Sugarland's debut album 'Twice The Speed'was different and sparkling and thoroughly enjoyable. It did have a few weaker moments. Thier second album 'Enjoy The Ride' was poor. It was one paced poor quality Bon Jovi type country rock although it had a few good moments. Thier third album, this one, is very good. It has variety, energy, good songs, some very good songs, with really good vocals from Jennifer Nettles. She is the voice of Sugarland, you rarely hear her duo partner. This has some of the better parts of the second album, has built on the first album and added to it. Really enjoyable and recommended.

Dylan (3CD)

For the uninitiated this is a great starting point, 51 tracks spread over 44 years showing a master lyricist at work. 90% of the selections are perfect and couldn't possibly have been left off but there are certainly some ommisions. Why only one track from Highway 61 revisited - even if that one track is Bob's best moment, Like a rolling stone. Surely Desolation Row should have featured and Ballad of a thin man. Three tracks from Oh Mercy is one or two too many and they're not even the best tracks. Brownsville Girl is a dodgy choice. Two other big ommisions are Mr Bojangles and Every grain of sand. And the choice of tracks from 'Modern Times' is poor with two of the weaker tracks making it - why no 'Working man's blues or Ain't talkin'. I suppose all Bob fans have there ... Read More:

The Christmas Album

Although some people might argue that not every song here is truly a Christmas song, every song here is entitled to appear on such an album. And any idea that a song has to mention Christmas in the lyrics in order to be classed as a Christmas song is clearly nonsense as that would rule out Silent night, the most popular Christmas song of all, and a whole hot of other Christmas perennials. I agree that some Christmas albums stretch the boundaries a bit too far, but this isn't one of them.

So to the actual music, which Connie recorded at at a time when her popularity was extremely high. Here, Connie was in top form as usual. Most of the songs are Christmas standards including Winter wonderland, The Christmas song, White Christmas, I'll be home for Christmas, Have yourself ... Read More:

Bob Dylan is one of those artists who elicit an almost spiritual devotion in his true fans and is constantly feted in the musical press( to a rather tedious degree in truth) but i can take him or leave him. There are Dylan albums i love just as there are Dylan albums whose critical acclaim leaves me rather baffled ( "Blonde on Blonde " for instance) Without doubt though the one Dylan album that i would listen to anytime anyplace is Nashville Skyline .
Released in 1969 it is Dylan's 9th studio album and marked a significant departure for Dylan into true rustic country music , although he had already marked a transition into this genre with John Wesley Harding.
