Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace.
Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace was the first of the "New Movies" that George Lucas has done, and he has brought back to the helm John Williams, Naturally! John has done it again! The music on this Soundtrack is of utmost quality, but nothing to surpass the originality of the first three feature films; Episodes 4, 5, and 6. The story for episode one may have seemed a bit juvenile when comapred to the first of the Star Wars Saga, but the music is still top Notch. I like to draw particular attention to Track Number 2; entitled "Duel of the Fates". What a wonderful piece of Cinematic music! This was back in the day when Disney were great: when the films had great stories to tell, when the characters were heroes and heriones and when the soundtracks had you singing along.
And this soundtrack really does make you sing (even if, like me, you're terrible). I mean, who in the English speaking world doesn't know at least the chorus to Colours Of The Wind?
But aside from being really catchy, Disney do what they did best and make sure that moral messages are conveyed throught he tracks too. Take Colours Of The Wind, for example. Lines like "You think the only people who are people are the people who look and think like you" really hammer home the message that Disney are getting at in this film, and it's not kiddies stuff, this ... This is a brilliant album. Right from the first track it has you on an emotional and musical roller coaster. As well as the haunting lyrics and music from the familiar The Fray and Snow Patrol, it introduced me to new groups and artists. Tunes from Metric and Ursula 1000 make you want to jump up and down and shout, whilst the calming voice of Anya Marina and Foy Vance bring you back down to a mellow level. Each song compliments the next, and whilst I own 100's cd's, this is nearly always one of the ones I turn to on a regular basis.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a 5 star album displaying once again Menken's talents. The music can be enjoyed by child fans of the movie and adult music lovers, although I feel some messages in the songs are too heavy for young children. The music has a catholic choral style (as some is in latin) as well as a gypsy bohemian theme contrasting. 'Hell fire' is a passionate song of lust with a heavy theme on the morals surrounding gypsys, witchcraft, church and the law. But the right message is sent out in the ballad 'God help the outcasts'. The music brilliantly describes the time and feel of Victor Hugo's epic novel with a touch of comedy in the talking gargoyles. This c.d is fabulous!

The original score for Toy Story is probably the best music Randy Newman has ever written. The Score contains dozens of original themes all of which are interesting and instantly memorable. As well as the score Newman also wrote 3 songs for the movie all of which are performed by himself and have heartfelt meaning and a certain honesty that only Newman can create. Newman joins the select group of composers who have been successful at Disney Scoring including George Bruns & The Sherman Brothers, and the legends that are Alan Menken & Howard Ashman. Newman went on to score the sequel as well as other Disney Pixar movies, although very good and worth checking out none of them match his original score for Toy Story.
