It has already been said here that this album is usually found in non-jazz fans' collections alongside Bob Marley's greatest hits and most probably David Gray's entire ouvre. Perhaps it stands sentry there unplayed, just so its spine can be read, head tilted sideways, begging to impress upon whoever it is browsing through their collection some ill-gotten measure of sophistication? Perhaps they did play it once then decided no, they were right about jazz all along?
Modal, understated, and (aaargh!) cool, or tedious, cicuitous and under-cooked? Amongst aficionados, the most fiercely debated issue with the session is whether you are appreciating it at the correct pitch (an issue with the tape playback speed when it was mastered). That ... Read More:

I saw Nitin play in Bristol in early November 2008 and he gave the best performance of the 5 times I have seen him. A delicate and sensitive gig, with Nitin mainly playing acoustic guitar, accompanied by some sublime cello playing and indian flute and tabla playing - all mixed with dreamy singing. This album reflects all that. A true concept album - a 45 minute journey through life today. Such a wide variety of influnces - how wrong the last reviewer is! This is a great Nitin album, and I've loved him from the start. Turn it on, lie back on the sofa and let yourself drift away.

To get the negative comment out of the way first, this compilation merits five stars for musical content, and the only reason I've docked one star is because of the slipshod presentation by EMI Gold. This is the company for which Humph recorded in the 78 era, from whence most if not all of these sides were drawn, yet the tracklist contains no reference to the personnel involved, and only an indication of the year, which is not always accurate. Furthermore, since the relatively brief liner note by Stuart Nicholson comments that "Represented here are three key periods of Lyttelton's distinguished career...early New Orleans Revivalist jazz,....the Johnny Hodges jump style...to the smoothly interlocking mainstream.." it would have been intelligent to have ... This is my favourite Christmas CD, it has something for everyone! It's the perfect antidote for the tired old tunes that everyone plays at Christmas (if I hear "I wish it could be Christmas every day" one more time I won't be responsible for my actions), the highlights being "Zat you Santa Claus?" by Louis Armstrong and "Silent Night" by Dinah Washington.
Give it a go and you won't be disappointed, especially at this price!!

The album was fantastic! The selection of songs was good. The songs are beautifully sung; I especially enjoyed `Don't Know Why' and `Nightingale'. Norah has a great voice, her music is soothing. NORAH JONES - come away with me, is definitely a good buy!

If this were on vinyl, I would never feel the need to play side 2 again - the last 5 or 6 tracks were obviously a challenge for the band to play and record, and are seriously challenging to listen to. I won't return to them anytime soon.
However, the opening tracks (particularly the extended track 'Premonition') are delightful improvisations that rank among ESTs best work, which would be enjoyed by fans of their previous recordings.

If you want just one or two of Ella's CDs ... then it should be this "Gold - All her Greatest Hits" and "Ella and Louis Together" (and if you can have the third, please make it "Ella in Berlin [Live] - Mack The Knife")
I have most of her CDs, and I can tell that the person who assembled "Gold - All her Greatest Hits" and "Ella and Louis Together" loves Ella so deeply. The songs he picked and the song order are of the absolute perfection. If you are after compilation CDs of Ella, look no further.
This "Gold - All Her Greatest Hits" is a wonderful CD if you want music that has full of passion, elegance and serenity at the same time. Specially. her 'Manhattan' is the best of all (naturally). I have heard this song by many other singers, but no one ... Read More:
