The budget price doesn't reflect the quality of this 2 disc collection of classical music highlights, for the soloists, orchestras, conductors and the recordings themselves ensure it is a good quality selection of mostly familiar music from the classical music repertoire.

The choices lean heavily towards the opera style, so for that reason alone will not be the only album necessary to cover everyone's taste - even the complete classical beginner will find many of their familiar favourites are absent.

The tracks are mostly single movements from the whole score, which may not please the more enthusiastic classical fan, but it's unavoidable given the short time permitted by only 2 CDs. In any case, this album really ... Read More:

As a professional concert pianist for the last thirty years or so, it was a great relief to find that they have released everything you need on 2 CDs. Sure enough, since I bought it I have been able to discard the 1000 or so CDs that I had collected of performers like Cortot, Horowitz, Rachmaninoff and Schnabel (and I now have enough room for a pool table!). They are simply not necessary when you have these two CDs.

Such is Classic FM's marketing team's enthusiasm for releasing these 'Music For' compilation albums we should soon have a CD in our collection to cover every eventuality in our lives!

This one is for dinner parties - although being a single CD it may need to be played several times depending on how quickly your guests eat - and the intention is to create a calm, relaxed atmosphere with perhaps an air of sophistication to those social events.

There should be something on this album to please everyone round the dinner table. Satie's 'Trois Gymnopedies' is soothing and familiar, Haydn's 'Cello Concerto no. 2' is more lively and Handel's 'Water Music' adds a bit of ceremony to the event.

This is a must-have collector's set, and amazing value.

I really bought it for Previn's rendering of the 1st Symphony, of which I had heard much good. It is indeed a very fine rendering, but I agree with the previous reviewer that Sargent's was in another class: crisper syncopations, MORE tension to my ears (exquisite menace, excitement, and melancholy), very finely judged transitions, altogether zippier and fresher.

Fortunately I still have the Sargent on LP, but the current unavailability of Sargent recordings on CD is becoming an obsession with me. Why no Sibelius 5th, for instance, or Pohjola's Daughter? Do recording companies not trust their ears? Do they still harbour prejudices born out of sarcastic (envious?) comments made when ... Read More:

It was a gift. When I fist listened to it, I could no beleave in what I was listening. Brazilian music played on a, or accompained by a cello. Yo-Yo MA achieves the hard task to put together the cello with one of the most rich music in the planet. I neve get tired to listen to it. You should try it to.

Ever since i was introduced to Classical music by my father at home and in music class at school i have appreciated the classics ability to soothe the mind, to be able to sink back and allow the mind to be massaged through the ears so as to be able to forget much of what troubles us, and Radio FM have again provided me with a beautiful continuity of music on these CDs to do just that. Gone is the need to turn the LP and for most of us we have the ability to place all the CDs in to a system and listen for hours on end, and with this set gone also is the need to skip tracks, each seems to flow naturally from the previous and merge nicely into the next, while the composers can take pride in their music, Radio FM can be proud of their management of all these pieces together. ... A few of the tracks on this CD are perfect, beautiful, soft, mesmerising and something Mummy could enjoy too... but I found the majority of tracks incredibly depressing - and thats not what you need after having a baby!!! I wish I'd paid more attention to the track listing and bought something else...
