This (along with the other CDs which form Lewis's complete Beethoven cycle) is the set I would recommend as the best single recording to have if you want just one recording of all these works, and as a recording that everyone ought to want to have in addition to any others. Other performances are wilder, faster, and louder - or generally more extreme - but if you really want to understand the works, these are quite wonderful. You won't really get the point if you're only awake to speed and dynamics, but if you're prepared to listen to these performances seriously you'll find out more about what's going in Beethoven than from any other performances I know. What you have here are deep sensitivity and a great command of piano tone in the service ... Read More:

Great collaboration ! Thanks to Andy Lewis for making that new macho voice surf on again. After reading Paolo Hewitt's "Changingman" and its spot on assertion that Weller's music is SO masculine since "Moderdism: A new decade (and I couldn't agree more) glad to see and hear Weller back to a soulful mood. Reminescences of "Solid bond..." and "Beat Surrender" poor in while the sound remains current, a great driving song. And, surprise, it gets even better ! A wonderful single. Can't wait for the OPUS.

Here are two of the most beautiful sonatas composed by one of the greatest composers of all times and played by one of today's greatest pianists, Paul Lewis, who despite his age needn't fear any comparison. After his success with two other Schubert sonatas he has given us another desert island disc. This is truely masterful, intelligent playing. Just try the beginning of the B flat major sonata's incredibly sad slow movement - if it doesn't make you cry you have a heart of stone. Or try the A major sonata's scherzo - what a phenomenal light touch. For me Paul Lewis isn't just one of today's greatest pianists - he is THE greatest and more than deserves all the rewards he is currently winning.

Liszt's Sonata in B minor is rightly regarded as one of the pinnacles of piano writing in the nineteenth century. It combines romantic intensity, virtuosic flair and formal complexity in a way which no other composer has since rivalled. It presents formidable technical challenges - although other works by Liszt are, arguably, more fiercesome for the potential performer.
The market place in the Liszt sonata is a crowded one. Yet I can say that Paul Lewis has few equals - this recording is up there with the very best. Lewis' approach is a tribute to his learning under Alfred Brendel and shows a profound musical sensibility at work. The technique is more than secure - at times the playing sounds effortless. But the virtuosity is for a purpose. ... Read More:
