I am a huge fan of Lion King since I was young, but only recently had the chance to catch the Lion King: Musical at Lyceum London. I already heard the good reviews from friends and colleagues, but nothing can prepare you for this experience! I have never really been a huge fan of musicals, but if there's one musical you ever catch, make sure it's this. Breathtaking sets and costumes, fantastic acting, powerful music and vocals, awe-inspiring coordination, choreography and directing are just some amazing elements of this musical. This leads me to the life of any musical...the songs. The original Lion King's songs are already classics in any standards (winning the Oscars, Golden Globes and what not)...but here, reinvented and given a breath of ... Read More:

Although the amazon site includes the wrong sound samples above (they are from the LaPone revival), this item is indeed the original cast recording with Lansbury and Cariou. Even better, it's been remastered and includeds 2 bonus track not featured on the original (and much more expensive) RCA double disc. What a find!

I could not wait to listen to this soundtrack and I wasn't disappointed when I did. The songs are fun, upbeat and completely original. As a soundtrack it works really well with songs that move along the plot and give strong character based lyrics. Unfortunately if you want a spot on replica of the film you will not get it but the writers have done a brilliant job adapting this from the screen to the stage, keeping the original plot as closely as possible and yet making this a strong individual show.
For me the best number was the opening one "Ohmygod you guys!" it completely captures the Delta Nu s with a great sense of fun, easily integrating dialogue and establishing Elle's character from the onset.

Bernstein wrote himself into the annals of musical history with the score which he composed for West Side Story, a nineteen fifties version of Romeo and Juliet, and Stephen Sondheim did it justice with the terrific lyrics he wrote which made the music soar even higher. This a musical which has entered the popular consciousness with good reason. Who hasn't heard the beauty and poetry of "Maria", the expectant poignancy of "Tonight", or the eternally hopeful "Somewhere" and not been touched, especially when sung, as they are here, by Jim Bryant and Marnie Nixon? There is also the upbeat "America" and "I Feel Pretty" which are ensemble songs geared to showcase Jerome Robbins' choreography to perfection. This is a magnificent CD which should be a part ... This really is the best recording of the show. I know there are longer versions but this is the original and the one to replace your old LP version which must now be worn out.
In 2008 in the UK we had an excellent profesional tour of the show and it was this CD that made me book for the show! Carol Channing is Dolly, was Dolly and nobody could better her performance.
The CD brings back seeing her on the London stage with Eddie Bracken as Horace and she was brilliant and this studio recording captures all of the razzmatazz. A super reissue of a classic album.

all i can say is the acting in the show must've been terrible because it recieved terrible reviews but the music in it is absolutely stunning... some of the best i've heard. i can't understand why it was slated. but yeah the music is fabulous, combining more tribal styles with contemporary music, just fabulous

The musical 'Hair' is easily one of my favourites. Here, the broadway album has been remastered for much better sound (many of the vocals are a lot clearer than on previous releases). The second disc contains the original 'off-broadway' album - never before released on CD. It provides a great insight into the humble beginnings of this experimental 'happening'. Also, the interview track with one of the show's creators Galt MacDermot is quite interesting (although probably unnecessary). Altogether, great value for money - and a must-buy for any fan of the show (or Hippie ideals!)
