This radio requires 6, not 4, AA batteries. I power it by mains and feed the output into an amplifier.
On FM there is a high-pitched whine if the amplifier gain is turned up too high. On DAB there is a low-frequency clicking sound. I can remove most of these extraneous noises by turning down the external amplifier's gain and using the radio's own volume control to give what are still adequate volume levels.
Five presets is really too few, especially on DAB.
The quality of the DAB broadcasts is inferior to that of the FM broadcasts, as the high frequencies are noticeably attenuated. However, this probably isn't the radio's fault. DAB is broadcast at too low a bit rate for music; it's significantly lower ... Read More:
I've owned this radio for at least two years and noticed it only has one review so thought I'd add one.
I work outside so wanted something that would last the day on battery and this does about 10hrs. Never got near the 15hrs advertised, but far better than anything else.
The best thing is the sound quality though. It's the size, and probably twice the weight, of a small/average hi-fi speaker. This means it delivers a much better sound than most DAB radios I've come across. Ideal for bbq parties etc. You can use it as a speaker for your mp3 player and even at hi volume the sound is superb.
It seems to pick up a signal as well as anything, but if you're new to DAB you will probably surprised at how much of the country ... Read More:

As with our other Pure DAB radio (Pure One)the reception, sound quality and functions such as the ability to pause and pre-programme to record to SD card are fantastic.
Be warned however that the performance as a clock radio is likely to disappoint some. As others have stated the glow from the display, even on the lowest setting, still lights the room and we certainly couldn't sleep with this. The only option is to set the display so that is switches off completely on standby. Whilst this does the trick you are unable to see the time during the night without hitting the 'light up' button.
The other frustrating point is the noisy, 'clicky' buttons. Sounds picky I know, but this is a problem when you set the alarm while your partner is already ... Read More:

If you live in an area where FM & MW signals are medium or strong, this is an excellent radio. The sound is rich & clear, the presets are easily adequate, there are no fiddly extra features that you don't need, and it's a pleasure to use.
I live in an area where the signals are weak, and it's poor here. A little Sony ICF-S10MK2 can grab the waves, having a proper antenna, but the 'phones on this model, good as they sound, don't work too well as an antenna. I tried other 'phones, to no avail.
So it's brilliant, or no good, depending on where you'll use it.

I have an analogue Roberts in the bathroom, a DAB Evoke Pure1 in my kitchen and have been after an RD50 for the bedroom for sometime. Despite being expensive I have not been disappointed with this radio.
It is so easy to use. Skim through the well laid out manual once and you will be able to operate all its features including PausePlus which lets you record 15 minutes of sound, if you have to attend to something else.
The DAB auto tune takes less than 10 seconds to find and store all of your available digital stations. The 6 part telescopic antenna which is about 20 inches long fully extended, gave me great reception. The LCD provides six different types of information including signal strength. There is also a useful button providing quick ... Read More:

Had it a month now and am really happy with it. I downloaded the upgrade that adds the electronic program guide to the DAB radio and really can't think of a better system for the money I paid.
It would have been nice to be able to record and play music to/from the USB slot but that's the only thing I can think to criticise it about. Highly reccommended.
