After years of suffering jumpy, easily scratched CDs, I had to think of either an MP3 or a MD player.. For some reason I couldn't cope with the unreal, untouchable MP3 player and I am now the happy owner of a Sony MZ-N505. It is a versatile player allowing you to shuffle recordings, combine tracks into groups and true to it's interactive Net claim, it specialises in working through your PC to deliver faultless sound quality, important if you are a musician.. The supplied earphones resist every attempt of a manic drummer to dislodge and the USB cable is, for once, long enough to keep in place at your PC without having to slide it out of the workstation every time.. All in all, a professional piece of kit..

I bought this and then wondered whether an MP3 player might have been the better option, but to be honest, it has a few advantages over an MP3 player.

You store on minidisks (obviously), which means that you don't have to delete songs as you won't be running out of space, even if you have a lot of music. Apart from putting music on using the included software you can also record directly from practically anything, it doesn't have to be digital. This means you can back up tapes or LPs and put them on the minidisk as well as rips from CDs or music you bought off the internet. That is probably the main advantage it has over MP3 players in my opinion, because they only read specific types of files.

This is an awsome MD. I come from australia and we don't get the AC adapter but i still think its the madest MD. I put 4 albums onto a 74 minute TDK minidisc using the LP4 mode (which in my opinion stands for 4 cds) and the sound quility is awsome. The MD has a mad bass and the features are endless. it even has AVSL which limits the speakers to a certain volume to so you can't blow the headphones or stuff your ears. Great buy.

This is an awsome MD. I come from australia and we don't get the AC adapter but i still think its the madest MD. I put 4 albums onto a 74 minute TDK minidisc using the LP4 mode (which in my opinion stands for 4 cds) and the sound quility is awsome. The MD has a mad bass and the features are endless. it even has AVSL which limits the speakers to a certain volume to so you can't blow the headphones or stuff your ears. Great buy.

I'm no stranger to the world of in car entertainment, headunit's in particular. I've had headunits from most of the major companies including Alpine, Pioneer and one other previous Sony headunit which I replaced with the MDX-M690. So i know what i'm looking for and i'm very particular in what i buy.

I decided to purchase the MDX-M690 as i have just bought a sony minidisc deck for my hifi to back up my old tapes. And as i had a CD headunit decided to change to minidisc so i could listen to my recently converted tape collection in my car. I had listened to other Sony minidisc headunit's and i wasn't impressed with the sound quality or the look of the headunit's.
