I bought this as a replacement for my minidisc, but the recordings have loads more hiss than the minidisc, when you record with a microphone, and subsequently is a bit of a let down...

For lining-in things, it's brilliant, and being able to drag and drop via USB is also brilliant. This side of things makes it much better than minidisc. Hiss and noise isn't a problem here.

But wandering about recording everyday stuff with my usual mics, seems to show up much more hiss than I ever got with minidisc.

Well firstly I must point out that Amazon have incorrectly listed this item as only having 64mb of memory - In actual fact it has 256mb of memory.

The max recording times in LP mode is 130 hours & 25 minutes or 29 hours & 45 minutes in HQ mode. The voice recorder works perfectly and the desktop software supplied is more than up to the job.

You can convert voice recording to MP3 files at the touch of a button or automatically should wish to share the files with others which is a nice feature. The unit is also certified for use with Dragon Naturally Speaking, which is helpful.

FM Radio works very well, overall a nice set of features for the money, but the build quality isn't perfect, as the back ... Read More:

I bought the Edirol R-09 primarily to record the soundtrack to my recent wedding. I also bought a small, good quality tie-clip microphone. The sound of the ceremony and the speeches was far better than could have been achieved by using a directional mic placed on the camcorder, and eliminated a lot of background noise, like babies screaming and echoing from people shuffling their feet. The recording quality in WAV mode is absolutely exceptional, whether used with the built-in microphones or an external mic. In playback, the noise sounds just like someone speaking. Absolutely awful. Background hiss from the tape is louder than the recorded sound. I use a micro-tape recorder at work all day, so know how they should function. This one is not fit for purpose, so I will be returning it to Amazon for a refund, and will replace it with a digital voice recorder with good reviews.
