Western Digital My Passport Essential 250GB USB Portable External Hard Drive

I've already got an older 60GB My Passport which is excellent; has always worked fine even after dropping it five feet onto a wooden floor.

The new one (320GB My Passport Essential) looks much the same and I am confident that it will be just as good...once I get it powered up. I plugged it into my four-year-old home Dell laptop and it failed to start up; the older 60GB version works fine attached to that computer. When I plugged the 320GB My Passport into my newer work laptop it worked absolutely fine.

The solution is to phone Western Digital European Tech Support (00800 275 49338) who know all about this problem; it is because older computers may not deliver enough power via the USB port to power the My Passport. ... Read More:

Bought 6 of these - 4 failed within less than a year. There are far better drives available. Would like to give WD drives a zero rating but amazon doesn't allow it. I'll never buy a Western Digital drive again.

This USB drive is an absolute bargain, costing no more than an internal drive of the same capacity. It is large enough to requre the use of an AC power supply, in case anyone was wondering. The case is very neat and the rubber protective ends are very functional. The best feature however is that it powers itself down when my laptop goes into sleep mode. Making it ideal for playing music, or even large batch tasks, it will simply turn off with the pc after a period of inactivity.

Bought 6 of these - 4 failed within less than a year. There are far better drives available. Would like to give WD drives a zero rating but amazon doesn't allow it. I'll never buy a Western Digital drive again.

Purchased this hard drive around 10 months ago to use as a Time Machine back up for my Macbook Pro.
The drive has a very sturdy build and feels very solid, there are two pieces of rubber at each end which mean the drive itself sits just off the desk, which is handy as you get a very little amount of rattles or vibrations. Read/Write speeds are about average for a USB 2.0 drive in my opinion.
The drive worked flawlessly with time machine and hasn't failed yet (touch wood) therefore I can't really fault it.

Oh, I did cover the WD logo with an Apple logo sticker, it looks much better now ;)

Having read what others wrote about this product and knowing that I had files to save that were larger than 4GB the first thing I did on getting this hard drive out of the box was to format it (as it comes in FAT32 format). This did take 13 hours but you only do it once, so I left it on all night. Once done though I have been able to download everything I own on both XP and Vista systems. This drive does not have a fan so is quiet to use and is plug and play. Cheaper than many others out there but still a reliable drive. I consider this purchase money well spent. Buy one.....

This hard drive is brilliant, its small and fits in my pocket. It stores everything I neeed to have on it easily and doesn't need to charge.

The only problems I found with this hard drive is that it scratches easily and the software that comes with it isn' worth using.

This hard disk drive is not much bigger than a mobile phone - 12.6cm x 7.9cm x 1.5cm - and holds a whopping 250Gb.

This makes is the perfect back-up drive that you can take with you. I carry mine in my laptop bag, so that should my laptop hard disk fail I have all my data with me and can still work. Assuming I can borrow a PC or laptop that is.

At home it can sit in a drawer and, if you want to pop round a friends house and share some tunes, it will sit in your pocket without causing an embarrassing bulge.

I have been using Western Digital for years and have never had any technical problems - I simply upgrade for capacity.
