This is my second radio, and there is no comparison with the one that is built into my MP3 player. I'm a great fan of radio, and this is just the ticket for my long commute to work. Its use is simple and self-explanatory, so it won't matter if you loose the instructions. You can pre-set it to 10 stations on FM and 5 stations on AM and it's got an amazing sound quality. The pre-sets work a treat and are simple to change at any time. It's relatively heavy which surprised me. It uses a single ordinary triple A battery which means no charging up over night. All plain straightforward high quality. I ordered on a Thursday evening and it arrived on Saturday morning.
Brilliant piece of kit, especially when connected to the Hi-Fi amp, giving perfect sound quality.
One niggle. Even with a new battery, the remote control only works from about 2 metres, and you have to peer at the front of the radio to read what it says, which makes the remote seem rather pointless. A more powerful remote with the radio screen duplicated would be the answer.
To any reading these reviews - there was a compatibility problem between the Robi and the Apple iPod Classic and 3G Nano models which appeared when Apple released version 1.1 of the iPod software for these models. Version 1.1.1 did not solve this. Version 1.1.2 released on 30th April 2008 does solve this, and the Robi now no longer turns off after two minutes. Thanks Apple! I can now listen for hours at at time. One minor new problem replaces that old one. If Robi is in DAB or FM mode and you use Robi to switch off your iPod, then you will generally need to use the iPod controls to switch back on again, and it may require a couple of On-Off cycles. No such problem if you switch off with Robi in Remote Control mode.
I bought one of these to use in the garden, being no mains power and not wanting to spend a small fortune on 6 'D' sized batteries for my other radio.
First impressions: Good quality build, rubberised controls, but no carrying handle. Headphone socket, mains adaptor socket and MP3 inputs on rear case. The mains adaptor itself covers 100-240V. You also have menu options as per which country you want the radio 'set up' to work in when you first switch it on.
Battery pack is 3 'AA' sized 2000mA nimh batteries wrapped in plastic that fit in a compartment in the bottom of the radio secured with 2 screws and has a tiny plug/socket connection.Has a rubber-ducky type antenna, which screws into place on the top. This has a telescopic antenna ... Read More:
I'd have to argue with the claim that this item ensures anyone sharing the bed isn't disturbed, at all. It's not quite that good, but does a fair job of reducing the noise of a bedside radio in general, and it's a handy item to have, if sharing the room with another person.
** Be Warned** - the volume of your radio will need to be considerably turned up to hear it through the pillowspeaker (and your pillow!) so standby to turn the volume DOWN swiftly, if you unplug the speaker - or you'll deafen the neighbours!
I have owned my original Roberts radio for years - its sound quality is excellent, and it is constructed of Wood, metal, leather and (knobs and perspex screen) of plastic. It looks and feels like quality. You could probably drop it out of a 4th floor window and it would be as good as new apart from a few scratches (although I can't guarantee this - just suppostion).
So - when I decided to upgrade to DAB - Roberts was my choice and I ordered one through an Amazon trader (never have seen it "in the flesh" just a picture).
I just cannot understand the other reviewers who write about this radio's "solid quality build" - well, maybe it is - compared with most of the other stuff currently on the market, but compared with what Roberts used to produce . . ... Read More:

It's a lovely piece of kit in all but one respect: the dimmer doesn't go dim enough. The radio and alarm functions are really easy to get used to, and we haven't even had to read the instructions to get used tyo any of that. But, boy, is that display bright. Even on the dimmest setting (there are three 'dimmer' options. The brightest is good enough to land sea vessels in thick fog). Great radio. Need sunglasses.
