Olympus WS-210S Digital Voice Recorder

The Olympus USA site has a better product description than anywhere I have seen, so take a look. The 'S' in WS-210S = Stereo (I think), so any product without an 'S' at the end is a mono recorder.

Amazingly small and light. Files are stored in Windows Media Audio format so will play in Windows Media Player, without any need for conversion.

It has a 'USB Direct' USB plug contained withit the recorder so it can be plugged directly into a pc. It does come with a short USB extension lead just in case your PC's USB port is tucked away.

A few features described:

1) Microphone sensitivity - Low = Dictation or High = Conference; Low cuts out some background noise.

This recorder has a serious design fault. It jams and gives an ERR message which can only be corrected by holding in the DISP/MENU and STOP buttons for two seconds, which results in all the material on the recorder being erased. There are numerous complaints on the Web by people who have had exactly the same problem. DON'T BUY IT!

The Olympus VN-2100PC digital voice recorder has a load of excellent features, and one pain. The good bits: it's simple to make and play back recordings, and to organise them in folders. The unit itself is light and small enough to fit in any pocket, so easy to take and use anywhere. It runs for ages on a pair of AAA batteries, and has plenty of recording capacity, depending on the quality of recording you choose. The bad bit? If you want to transfer the recordings somewhere else, it's a bit fiddly. First, you have to set up the "Digital Wave Player" software on your PC, then transfer the files. Dissapointed with the quality of photos. Comparing the 1010 to its previous model, 840 - there was a big difference in quality of photos. 1010 was blurry around the edges and 840 was crisp. This is the disadvantage of having all the extra's packed into a compact camera- however, you would think that Olympus make the newer model atleast of the same quality. Fine for regular photos, but as soon as you want to do some cropping and blowing photos to larger sizes, sacrifice quality a great deal. I find the 840 the better option, or even sharper photos are produced by Casio. Can't comment on other brands of camera's, as I haven't used them as yet. I would recommend you try it out in the shop first, and make a decision.

I am the harshest critic I know. I am not easily please with electronics especially if they don't perform everything they're meant to do. This particular product exceeds my expectation and is the best on the matket. I have carried out extensive research and all was pointing to this one. Tip on if you're using this:

Buy a powerful battery; it will last.
Set the settings to low cut (reduces general noise level), HQ (high quality, although have to sacrifice space) and enable voice filter (lowers crowd level and concentrates on main speaker).

Olympus WS-321M Digital Voice Recorder

I bought this to record my conversations with idia of improving my communication quality. Recording was not that good untill I bought Olympus mono microphone for 17.49. Batteris must last for a long time because I am using the original pair for about three weeks. With the microphone fitted it picks up small sounds clearly about7 feet away.
