I read all the feedback on this item before I bought it and was aware of software/driver problems with negear adapters so I downloaded and installed the latest driver without bothering with the CD included. During the install I chose to use windows to set up the network and managed to get this working although it was a bit of a fiddle.
Initially i had a lot of problems with the explorer not connecting to the internet despite excellent reception. Eventually I realised the problem was being caused by Netgear's Smart Wizard which was added to the "Start up" list of programmes. This seemed to be interferring with XP wireless network. Once I turned it off everything was fine and has not caused problems since.

My first Netgear 834G died after just two years - doesn't seem very long compared with other IT equipment I have. Netgear sent a free replacement, good. To set this up took three days of attempts to get it working (reflecting difficulties with setting up my original 834). In the end, I spent almost three hours on the phone with two different Netgear engineers - one from the sub-continent and difficult to understand, and one from LA, very helpful and knowledgable, who took a further 40 mins to fix the set up problem.
The installation and set up material is entirely inadequate and contradictory, and assumes professional understanding of procedures and acronyms. It doesn't suggest using a professional to install it, which I would recommend. It works, ... Read More:

Set up took 15 mins. Instructions easy to follow. I'm using the router with a Virgin Broadband modem located in a loft room and signal strength is strong and reliable throughout the house. Recommended.

I decided to do some research before I purchased and read the positive and negative reviews on Amazon and different websites and decided that I would purchase from Amazon.co.uk as they have the best price around.
I purchased the DG834N with PCI Adapter WN311B saving my self about £40 against retail store prices like PCWorld or Dabs etc.
I remember reading some where on Amazon some customers had problems with the software, I had no problems with the CD software of the DG834N so therefore would recommend using the CD for the DG834N as it makes it a lot easier than doing the set up manually.
Unfortunately I would agree with any customers who purchased the WN311B PCI adapter not to use the software on the CD as it does appear its a bit bugy. I ... Read More:

Looks pretty (no ariels and cute flashing LEDs) but my DG834PN was rubbish. Every time the XBox 360 Wifi joysticks were on the wifi connection to my laptop would drop to almost nothing. Also had loads of problem with random hanging and needing rebooting dispite many firmware updates. I eventually sold it and replaced with a BT Voyager 2110 which works flawlessley but don't look as pretty.

Printers, PCs and a WAP were beginning to outnumber the ports on my router, so I bought a Netgear GS605 to extend the network. It couldn't be easier to setup and install. It was a matter of taking everything out of the box and plugging in the power supply, the link to the router and the network cables to the devices. That's it - no setup disk or passwords, no IP or MAC Addresses to be entered - it does all the mapping itself.
And like Jet Set Willy, I went and bought another a few days later to sort out my son's collection of Printers, PCs and a WAP.

I bought this to replace a Belkin ADSL2+ ROUTER W/MODEM * N1 VISION which proved unreliable and didn't allow assignation of fixed IP addresses and am well pleased with the decision to go back to Netgear.
It copes well with my rather complicated network - I live in a big old house with thick walls; as well as the wired and wireless n network, there's a powerline element using a Netgear WGXB102 54 Mbps Wall-Plugged Wireless Range Extender Kit and a Netgear XE104 85 Mbps Wall-Plugged Ethernet 4-port Switch, a gigabit switch, Slingbox Classic (UK), Windows Home Server box, Media Centre Vista 32 PC on the powerline, several Vista 32 laptops and two desktops, one running Vista 64 and an XP veteran connected to the router; there are also two network printers, a HP Color ... I have used this adaptor both on computers running XP and now VISTA.
I have had not 1 problem with using on either whatsoever.
Other reviewers warn you about using it on VISTA - well all i did was to plug it into my new DELL desktop and it was up and running in 3 minutes !!
I did'nt need to down load new drivers or anything. So where the other reviewers came across VISTA prolems i don't know.
Great bit of kit.

Dead easy to install, I think all Netgear products are the best on the market for the price. These plugged into the wall and appropriate machine and hey presto, it just worked! If your wireless signal is pants strongly suggest you try these
